Another ride you might wish to try is the Alston Loop:
Armathwaite-Staffield-Renwick-Hartside-Alston-Slaggyford-Halton lea Gate-Talkin- Castle Carrock- Hornsby-Armathwaite.
About 42 miles- Good route- some of which is going to be in Tour of Britain this year with their ascent of Hartside.
I hope you enjoy your stay in Armathwaite- I live nearby and its a great place to ride...

Cheers! I was thinking of a route out to Talkin Tarn, think Talkin is a couple of miles before that? Will take a look at those routes but won't have GPS easily readable when on the move (phone shoved in back pocket).
I've been to Armathwaite three years in a row now, this'll be the first time I've taken the bike. Opportunities to get lost and probably a real challenge in trying to not look at the scenery too much! Hopefully will get a few hills in as part of my training for VeloWales.
Cheers for all the replies, great stuff!
Cheers for the route! Not sure about Hardknott or Kirkstone just yet but do want to challenge myself.
Will see how brave I'm feeling when there!
Kirkstone Pass from the Ulswater/Patterdale side dropping down into Windmere is a tough climb and cracking decent.
Then if your feeling really brave you can return the way you came via "the struggle"
Ooh, enjoy. A lovely ride (although not as challenging as Simon Warren suggests in his book. You I cycled there from Keswick and you can see the route I took here: https://app.strava.com/activities/23313782
I hope you get a misty day, not because I want to spoil the view for you, but because the place is eerie when climbing up into the cloud and reaching the big satellite station. Great ride, enjoy. You also going to do Hardknott?
