So I guess you all know the drill – I assume you get loads of these threads so sorry to be a bore!

However, this whole new bike malarkey is a bit of a minefield so any help you can give is definitely appreciated.

A little background: I’m fairly fit generally and I’ve recently been doing a few cycles around the 30 mile mark (although with fairly challenging hills) with friends and family who are keen cyclists, on borrowed bikes. I have loved it mind. The bike I’ve mainly been using is fairly old and worn, slightly too small for me and I’m told the gears are not quite right and the bike itself is quite heavy. I did hire a trek madone for a day and that was a much better fit and feel. In any case, I’ve enjoyed the rides and I know that cycling is something I’ll take to quite keenly. I have a budget of up to £1200 and I’ve seen that lots of places are offering what seem to be good deals on last years bikes. One friend advised that if it’s something I think I’ll be doing regularly long term, to think about spending towards the higher end of my budget rather than get something more ‘entry level’ and then want to upgrade at a later stage (as he did himself).
I’ve been having a look, but to be honest I’m not really sure what bikes are worthwhile for the money, I’ve come up with:

    Cannondale Supersix Evo 105 6 2014 at £1199;
    Bianchi C2C Impulso 105 2013 at £927
    Boardman team carbon at £999
Merida Ride Carbon Comp 93 2014 at £899

There’s also the NeilPryde Alize 105 2014 which is £1200 but I’m slightly put off because it seems like it may be too advanced for me. The saving on it seems quite good though which is why I considered it in the first place.

Are any of these good ideas? I haven’t used any of them as these are all found from the internet. I know this is the best starting point but it could prove tricky – there’s an Evans near me so I could get the cannondale sent there to try it – although a review of it said it’s ‘an aggressive racing position’ which might mean it’s not that comfortable – I don’t know how much of a difference this actually makes. Alternatively the Merida is reviewed as being the opposite end of that scale and perhaps would force me to sit up too high.

I’m sure I’m missing lots from my research but if anyone could give me some hints that would be great!

A final word from me to say thanks all. I got the cannondale at a further reduced price as it had a very small chip in the paint, so with basic pedals it was £1k 🙂 . Not had a proper ride on it yet but very pleased.

Thanks everyone who helped. Much appreciated!

I’ve read a lot about this
I’ve read a lot about this dreaded BB30 creaking, a real downer to such a beautiful bike. My personal fave has to be the one in team colours 😉

    Gorgeous bike!

I have had my Supersix 105
I have had my Supersix 105 but the grey one for 2.5 months and so far i changed the PF30 for a Praxis converter as it developed a terrible creaking and clanking, and shimano 105 crankset, i also developed a clicking from handlebar stem area and couldn’t get rid of it, but have flipped the stem and put spacers above the stem, only done 1 ride like this so not sure i have cured it, also replaced the brakes for 105’s and there better, time will tell whether it stays or goes.

They didn’t unfortunately. The frame was size 60 and they only had up to 56 in anything else – I’m pretty tall and they said they didn’t stock larger bikes, preferring to order them in. I know I should test something else really but I feel like there was nothing majorly wrong with this bike and I did enjoy it so why not!

Glad to hear you like the supersix, stunning bike. I saw they had some kind of team paint going on (green/white) which looked nice but I think it was dearer. Did they have anything else for you to ride/compare to?

    Hi again, reporting back to
Hi again, reporting back to all those that were interested in my test ride. I have to say I was really pleased with the supersix – it felt good riding it and I didn’t feel like I was too far forward at all. Gears were great to use and I felt like I had loads of room frame-wise. The brakes were decent although I’m not sure how they’re supposed to feel – they didn’t seem to lock when I clamped down on the handle but I did feel in control fairly well.

There is a warning to anyone taking what I’m saying as being anything of value – I’ve been riding a heavy bike that’s probably 5 or 6 inches too small for me and with really poor gears – this was so, so much nicer to ride than that so I guess anything half decent and more to my size was going to be!

I didn’t get the bike yet but I think I’m going to go back tomorrow and pick it up and choose some pedals – not sure I’m quite ready for cleats yet mind – I like to use the middle of my feet pedalling uphill but maybe in a month or two when I’m a bit more familiar with the bike, then I might try them out.

Thanks for the help everybody – it’s been really useful and you’ve helped make me very happy – I’m pretty excited about taking the bike and I might even skip work for half the day to take it for a spin! 🙂

Cheers, yeah I’ll post back on here after I’ve tried it out – I can’t promise I’ll be a good judge though as I’m a novice – hence this thread 🙂

    Some really useful advice here.

OP: keen to hear your thoughts on that SuperSix, didn’t realise that was full carbon, very good value for money; I may be tempted myself!! I did have a weakness for a Domane; I got a discount code through via email (domane100) from Rutland…

perhaps give that a try, looks are fab and they say the ISO decoupler works a treat.
