Commuter diaries – must clean up the lounge

Before I start arguing about whether cyclists are constrained by speed limits (it only leads to scoffing that they should be -and licensed, and insured, and number-plated, and anything else I can pull out of my cliche bag), I would: - challenge the presenter's assertion that he sees cyclists zooming by at over 20 mph in slow traffic - highly unlikely to be more than a rare event - challenge the presenter's description of being trapped in traffic, when he is the traffic he's complaining about - remind the presenter that, if he took to a bike, he could show other cyclists, based on his undoubted experience and knowledge, how to cycle properly - and he'd get around faster, to boot! - in the first place and at the first opportunity, refer the researcher inviting me to the "interview" on GBeebies to the answer given in Arkell v Pressdram.

Why are the Merseyside trains more precious than Le Shuttle, the channel ferries, or the many ferries that serve our islands? And why did BA let me bring two 500W batteries on my flight last year?

We need to ban petrol, diesel, and electric cars from the shuttle train, and ferries, and car parks, and parking lots, and garages, and... oh wait.

Odd: they laughed at Sherry, who was 100% right, but listened in silence to Charles Amos whose figures were laughable. I wonder if he'd be of the same opinion that saving money is more important than saving lives if it was his parents or children that were next to be killed.

I totally understand the shop's problems because I also run a bike repair business. However, I was surprised that they said "We can fix a puncture but won’t fix anything electric on them" - I don't know why they are touching them for any reason; for legal and moral reasons. Walking away is my first instinct when I see those machines - I don't care what kind of work is needed.

Tricycles and quadricycles? Have you been on a Belgian beach holiday recently? 😉 For me 20mph is a bit high, unless you're restricting these to roads (so mostly not on cycle paths). And not sure if the plan is for them to *mix* with the buses, but if so that would be a bad idea. Very different patterns of movement plus even small buses are quite a bit larger than cars (with attendant visibility problems etc). Buses are also much better at damaging surfaces. All the local bus stops are identifiable for the waves of tarmac which are then a hazard to cyclists. Keep the two separate.

Well there are certainly selfish humans here. But I'm curious whenever people use this as an explanation (or positive exceptionalism) - do you think it is something specific in *these* humans in *this* place? Or "UK culture" - but why do people eg. pay taxes and help others in different contexts? Or ... could there be other explanations why eg. ordinarily selfish human beings in eg. Amsterdam don't seem to be causing these issues, but ones in the UK are?
