Dynamic Barkeeper Pro tubeless sealant is, according to Dynamic, “the best sealant in the world”. In practice, it’s a clean option that does what it says on the tin, boasts biodegradable credentials, and is easy to top up and replace. It’s quite pricey, but I think you get what you pay for.

Dynamic is best known for producing various bike cleaning and maintenance products. Based in the Netherlands, it’s the official partner of some of the top WorldTour teams, like Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, Alpecin-Deceuninck, and FDJ-Suez – so its products are backed with heaps of pro victories at some of the biggest races in the world.

Its punnily named Barkeeper Pro (geddit? because it keeps bars of pressure in your tyres…) sits above its regular Barkeeper sealant as its top-line offering for filling tubeless tyres across all disciplines, from road, to gravel, to mountain biking.

Barkeeper Pro is only available in one size, 1L, for £49.99. It’s not bad value for money, but it’s a tough price to swallow in one hit. I’d like to see smaller bottles available for carrying on the road or trail. It’s also a little awkward to use as there’s no injector included, so I found myself having to pour sealant carefully out of the big, heavy bottle into my half-open tyres, which did lead to some spillages. The liquid itself is bright green, almost neon, and has proved quite difficult to get out of my carpet… Handle with care!

Dynamic claims the following about Barkeeper Pro: ‘Barkeeper Pro is the ultimate tubeless sealant. When every second counts, this is what you need. The cutting-edge Hi-Fibre synthetic latex formula seals punctures up to 8mm and does so within record time. Barkeeper Pro seals 6mm punctures at a pressure of 4 bar within 1 tyre rotation at 30 km/h. That is within less than 0,5 sec!’

Now those are pretty bold claims, presumably backed up by extensive in-house testing. I didn’t put a carefully measured 8mm slash in my tyre to test this, but I did find a few specs of sealant on my tyres after a few rides over the test period that I’m sure were sealed punctures. The green colour is easy to spot, and gives a good indication of where you might need to make a repair to a tyre, or remove some glass or thorns.

Fortunately – or rather, unfortunately – just as I was preparing to write up my review I suffered a pinch flat on my front wheel after riding over a pretty large rock I somehow missed out on the road. The tyre flatted pretty much instantly, and I assumed it must have burped given how dramatic the deflation was.

On closer inspection, I found the sidewall had slashed and not sealed. In fairness, it was probably bigger than 8mm – I’m not sure any sealant would have plugged this hole.

I managed to get the tyre to hold air for a bit – until I put my weight back on and it split open again, but I have to say the Dynamic Barkeeper Pro came pretty damn close to plugging the hole. So, although it was a taxi ride home (okay, a grovelling phone call to my partner to come and rescue me), I think the sealant did a pretty good job of… almost sealing it.

When I removed my tyre after the test period, the sealant looked basically as it did when I put it in. It was still free-flowing liquid, with absolutely zero clumping or stickiness that would prove tricky to clean. Dynamic does claim that this is a perk of the sealant, and that it can be topped up rather than fully replaced, so in theory lasts longer – which is cool.

The sealant is 100 per cent carbon safe, ammonia free, hypo-allergenic, non-corrosive, and biodegradable – which is great, and in my opinion should be the absolute standard with any products in this category.

Value

Price-wise, as I said earlier, £49.99 is a lot of money to spend on sealant in one go, but Dynamic suggests this should last for up to five years, so assuming it doesn’t go out of date you’ll eventually get your money’s worth.

It offers the regular Barkeeper sealant for £39.99 in the same volume, but that comes in a variety of sizes.

On the difference between the regular and Pro, Dynamic says: ‘Barkeeper Pro seals holes faster than the regular Barkeeper and can seal holes up to 8mm, whereas the regular Barkeeper seals holes up to 7mm.’ Though it doesn’t explain why.

Peaty’s and Weldtite are both a fair bit cheaper. I can’t comment on their effectiveness as I haven’t used them, but George thought the Peaty’s was excellent (£29.99 for a litre), while Matt was a little less effusive about the Weldtite, deeming it “reasonably effective” (£18.99 a litre).

My outgoing sealant was Squirt’s, which again is less expensive, £39.99 a litre, but in truth I found it a bit less effective, too.

Conclusion

All in all, though expensive, Barkeeper Pro is a really good option to keep in your workshop or garage. Its cumbersome size is only really an issue if you like to carry sealant on the road with you to races or in a frame bag on epic, adventurous rides. It’s an effective sealant that lasts a long time and I’m convinced will plug most holes you’ll encounter while riding.

Verdict

Good, if expensive, sealant – but it’s only available in a 1 litre bottle, and does stain
