There are gravel wheels galore this week as our Matt gets stuck into some back to back testing with both alloy and carbon wheels on test from a range of brands. He’s also been busy testing the brand new, fast rolling Maxxis Receptor gravel tyre launched this week. Finally keeping energy levels high are new nut butter snacks from Outdoor Provisions. Dig in…… we are.

The Maxxis Receptor is a new gravel tyre, launched at the start of this week. We had one in on test early, so our Matt got straight on with the review. He says this is a light tyre which has minimal tread, delivering an incredibly fast ride. It has a supple design and some puncture resistance that are brilliant on hardpack and roads – it could be a great race tyre if you know the conditions will suit. Read the full review here.

One of our favourite energy bar company is back with a new product range – tasty nut butter in two favourites. The guys at Outdoor Provisions say the all natural nut butters are great for getting slow release energy from good fats, there are no refined sugars and they are a source of protein too. 

Packs of ten individual nut butter in a mix of the two flavours (almond, date, sea salt or coffee, almond, cashew) are £15. WTB CZR i23 700c gravel wheelset

Last week we told you Liam was testing a new WTB wheelset, the CZR i30’s, this week Matt gets the same wheels on test but in a narrower 23mm internal diameter width, better suited to gravel tyres. 

The CZR’s are WTB’s new 29er carbon rims that come in two sizes, a 30mm internal width intended for mountain bikes and this 23mm width for gravellers. The price for the WTB CZR carbon rims is £500 per rim. We have a full build here topped off with 42mm WTB Resolute tyres. 

 

Scribe Carbon Gravel Wide++ 700c wheelset

Keen on back to back testing of gravel wheels Matt will also be riding these Scribe Carbon Gravel Wide++ in a 700c size. These carbon rims have a 25mm internal diameter and 28 spokes per wheel. They weigh in at a claimed 1,485g with Scribes own hubs and a SRAM XDR freehub. Scribe says they use ‘Carbon T:Tech’ to strengthen rim walls, and rim bed – offering long-term strength, even under high pressure, plus optimised ‘TG’ (Glass Transition) resin to produce a super lightweight, responsive, low void carbon for increased performance. 

 

Ere Research Tenaci GR20 wheelset

Not quite so pricey are the Ere Research Tenaci GR20 wheels. These brand new wheels are alloy with bladed spokes (24 each), a 24mm inner width, Ere’s own hubs. They weigh in at a claimed 1,625g and are available in 6 different colours including this olive.
