British brand Hope has teased a range of upgrade options for Brompton’s G-Line folding bikes, allowing riders plenty of opportunity to accessorise. 

Despite beginning life as a somewhat odd folding bike with amusingly small wheels, Brompton has become a fashionable must-have for the cycling city commuter. It’s therefore unsurprising that Brompton owners should want to accessorise their machines.

Hope will soon, we’re told, be producing upgrade parts for the G-Line bikes and as you might expect, they’ve opted for their classic anodised finish.

What initially caught my eye was the 48T Spiderless Chainring mated to a set of EVO cranks. 

With the G-Line being aimed at riders covering some lighter gravel, Hope has opted for slightly smaller gearing and uses a narrow/wide tooth profile.

Hope tells us that the specific chainring enables the use of standard EVO aluminium or carbon cranks along with the shorter RX axle. This, according to Hope, gives the correct q-factor and clearance required to maintain the proper folding function.

The headset fitted to this bike will work for both G-line and T-line models. Hope told us that it has used machined 2014-T6 aluminium cups, housing sealed stainless angular contact bearings, with the aim being to keep service intervals as widely spaced as possible. No one, afterall, wants to service a commuting bike.

Possibly the nicest addition, however, comes in the form of the roller wheels with their machined 2014-T6 aluminium wheel centres. Inside, Hope says that you’ll find a larger bearing, again in an effort to reduce maintenance. An increased diameter, meanwhile, is intended to give superior performance on un-even surfaces when combined with the treaded tyre.

Moving to the saddle mount, Hope says that fewer parts should make maintenance and adjustment easier. Serrated clamps provide a more secure connection to suit the increased demands during off-road use while there is simple adjustment with a single 5mm hex.

At the rear of the bike, there is a machined aluminium single speed chain tensioner, designed specifically for G-line gear hub models. Hope says that this rotates on IGUS bushing, and features an increased spring tension with chain retention devices on both jockey wheels to improve chain retention during off-road use. 

The system does, however, have an added de-tension feature to aid wheel removal, while the jockey wheels get sealed cartridge bearings.

Across the rest of the bike you’ll find some other existing Hope parts, such as the XCR Pro X2 Brakes, which Hope has paired with 22mm flat mount calipers and floating 160mm centre lock rotors

Finishing the bike is a 30mm stainless BSA threaded bottom bracket. Quite when all of this will be available, however, is unclear.
