Uvex Flowline glasses

The Uvex Flowline glasses sit towards the more affordable end of the premium performance eyewear market. They combine a large frameless shield lens, adjustable fit and lightweight construction, but without the premium price tag of many rivals. They lack interchangeable lenses, but promise excellent optics, all-day comfort and dependable protection for all styles of riding. After several weeks of testing across a wide range of conditions, they may well have become my favourite ever pair of cycling glasses.

The Flowline is available in five versions, with four different lens options across the range, each with its own category and light transmission level.

The Mirror Red version tested here uses a category two lens that offers 25% light transmission – the brightest option in the range. Uvex recommends it for cloudy and overcast conditions, although it proved versatile beyond that.

The remaining options are all category three lenses intended for sunnier days. The Mirror Blue and Mirror Black allow 13% light transmission, while the Mirror Gold lets through just 11%.

The higher light transmission does not compromise protection. All Flowline lenses provide 100% UVA, UVB and UVC protection (up to 400nm), while the mirrored coating also reflects infrared radiation.

That level of protection is perhaps no surprise when you discover that the Uvex name comes from “UV EXcluded”. It is one of those things that seems obvious once you hear it, but I certainly learnt something new.

The Flowline does not feature a replaceable lens system, with every model in the range using a fixed lens.

For me, the fit was immediately excellent without any adjustment, although I was able to fine-tune it for subsequent rides thanks to the adjustable ends, which can be bent and will hold their position. A few small tweaks allowed for a slightly tighter wrap around my head.

They could equally be adjusted to better suit helmet vents or you could loosen the fit if the curve feels too aggressive. The nosepiece is also fully adjustable, with enough length and movement to make the adjustments genuinely worthwhile.

Optical clarity is exceptional, and the lens is large enough to provide a full field of vision. Despite the generous coverage, the frame sits completely out of sight when worn and never feels oversized or bulky. The fit is relatively close to the face, and although I initially expected this to cause sweating or fogging at lower speeds or to restrict airflow, they didn’t fog once, even during hard efforts or slow climbs with very little airflow.

Fit is always personal, and the Flowline is only available in a single frame size. I suspect it may feel a little small for riders with very large heads. For reference, I generally wear a medium helmet, with a head circumference of 57cm at its widest point and around 56cm where the glasses sit.

I used the Flowline with several different helmets, including the MET Trenta 3K, the Abus Airbreaker 2.0 and the Abus Gamechanger 2.0, and all provided a secure place to store the glasses when they were not being worn.

One characteristic that really stood out compared with every other pair of glasses I have used was how effectively they managed sweat. Whether it is due to the flatter lens profile or the shape and length of the nose bridge, moisture consistently seemed to run down around the nose rather than dripping directly onto the lens. This remained true even during a heatwave and some of the hottest riding conditions I have experienced, when sweat certainly wasn’t in short supply.

While this lens is intended for cloudy or overcast conditions, I also used it extensively under clear blue skies. Where it really excelled was when riding in and out of wooded sections where it allowed enough light without the momentary darkness that some lenses create when entering shade. This makes it particularly well suited to off-road riding and routes that regularly pass through forests.

Although the optical clarity and fit were outstanding, a few minor drawbacks prevented the Flowline from being perfect. The lens appeared quite susceptible to fine marks and scratches, and despite careful handling and initially using them only on the road, they picked up a couple of very small marks after the first ride.

On the bike, both the frame and lens were completely silent, but they did creak slightly when handled off the bike. The fixed lens is also worth considering, as replacements are not available should it become excessively worn or get damaged in a crash, or if you simply want a different tint.

Many premium glasses are also supplied with just a single lens, and replacement lenses can often be expensive enough that buying another complete pair makes more financial sense. At £79.95, the Flowline represents good value from a well-established brand.

Even without interchangeable lenses, you could buy two pairs with different lens options for less than the cost of some competitors, such as the recently tested Scicon Aeroshade 2.0 or Koo Nebula, both of which are close to £200.

Closer in price are the Panda Optics S25-1, which I tested last year at £78. While the Panda glasses offered good optical clarity, the Uvex Flowline is a noticeable step ahead in almost every area.

If you are looking for a high-quality, exceptionally comfortable pair of glasses and do not need interchangeable lenses, the Uvex Flowline is an outstanding option and comes highly recommended.
