The Scicon Sports Aeroshade 2.0 Titanium are the newest sunglasses of choice for Tadej Pogačar and the rest of UAE Team Emirates XRG. Whilst these are pro riders who are paid to use the product, the UAE squad is one of the more discerning when it comes to choosing sponsors, and these sunglasses offer tremendous adjustability if you’re fussy about fit.

The standout feature, as the name would suggest, is the use of ‘medical-grade’ titanium in the temples for, ‘strength, flexibility, and long-term structural integrity’.

Scicon says the material, ‘resists deformation, corrosion, and temperature extremes, maintaining consistent fit and retention ride after ride.’ The use of this material does come with a slight weight penalty of around 4g over the Aeroshade Kunken, but if you say you can tell the difference between 36g or 40g when wearing these on your face, then I’m not sure I’d believe you.

The glasses are very comfortable to wear. The tips of the arms use Scicon’s Tactigrip technology – a flexible rubberised material that holds its shape and which offers basically infinite adjustment.

A similar material is used in the FlexiFit 2.0 adjustable nose pad to offer true personalisation. The nose pad also has ‘Horizon Adapt’ technology, which means it can be clicked into a high or low position to change the position of the frames on your face according to your preference.

This much adjustability isn’t common in sunglasses, so they’re a really great option if you’re particularly picky about fit and find you don’t get on with off the shelf sunnies.

I tested these sunglasses in Black Crystal frames with high contrast Multimirror Green lenses, and I found the latter to be excellent. The category 3 lens is quoted as having 11 per cent light transmission, and I found it ideal for road riding in the sun and even in cloudier conditions.

Off road, under dappled light through trees, I found the lenses to be a little bit too dark – but this isn’t really what they’re designed for. The glasses also ship with a second category 1 low-light lens, which is a lovely touch that makes the glasses much more usable year round.

Coverage and ventilation were both great, with vent slits at the top of the lenses where they meet the frame, and ‘vortexflow’ technology designed to optimise airflow and minimise fogging. I didn’t find fogging to be an issue at all with, and could position them far enough away from my brow to prevent them catching sweat too.

Snapping the lens out of the frame to swap the tints over is a little bit rudimentary, and it did feel like I was being quite rough with the glasses. However, I haven’t damaged them or affected the shape, so it’s really just something to get used to. It is quite fiddly though and you have to be careful not to lose the nose piece as it completely comes away from the glasses when you remove the lenses.

On aesthetics, I can’t say I loved the way these looked on my face. They’re very angular and pointy, which looks a little bit, dare I say, villainous to me. You might like them, and they might grow on me, but they’re also quite busy with the chrome Scicon logo on the front, so I haven’t warmed to them yet.

Price wise, they are expensive. £192 is a lot of money to drop on a pair of sunglasses, but in my opinion these actually aren’t bad value. They have a second lens included, as well as a multi purpose soft case, and they’re packed with features that go some way towards justifying the price.

I would have liked to have seen a solid case included to protect the glasses when travelling, but this is something a lot of brands exclude nowadays.

You can, of course, spend a lot less on sunglasses, but most will lack the features of the Scicons.

The Rapha Reis Glasses, for example, cost £160, but come with just one lens and offer far less adjustability.

For £182.75, the Alba Optics Delta CRST VZUM F Lens FLM sunglasses are stylish and versatile and boast a photochromic lens, but have no adjustability in either the nose piece or the arms.

Similarly, Oakley’s Kato sunglasses – the top of their road range – cost a fair chunk more at £245 and have basically none of the features or adjustability included in the Scicons, so look like pretty poor value in comparison.

Overall

I really liked the Scicon Aeroshade Titanium sunglasses but I probably wouldn’t buy them, just down to the way they looked on my face. Having said that, I really appreciate the features on these sunnies. They feel very well thought out and executed. If you’re into the UAE Emirates angular aesthetic then give these a look. You won’t be disappointed.
