British cyclist killed, two injured, after driver crashes into them in Romania

Police spokeswoman says 20-year-old driver involved in fatal crash near Tulcea "didn't give enough room" to riders...

A British tourist on holiday in Romania has been killed and two others seriously injured after a driver who reportedly "didn't keep his distance" from them crashed into the trio as they were cycling in the east of the country this afternoon.

The fatal incident happened on a road between the village of Agighiol and the city of Tulcea, close to the country's Black Sea coastline, reports realitatea.net.

The cyclist who died was reported to be a 56-year-old male who suffered a heart attack following the incident, while the two riders who sustained serious injuries were both aged 60.

Amalia Ignatencu, spokeswoman for the county police inspectorate, said that police were investigating the incident, and that it appeared the 20-year-old male motorist involved, who has been held for questioning, "didn’t keep his distance” from the cyclists.

County ambulance service director Dumitru Valcu said: "We did everything possible for one of the tourists, but we could not save him," adding that one of the seriously injured riders was airlifted to hospital in Tulcea with concussion and abdominal injuries and was reported to be undergoing a CT scan.
