The DeFeet Slipstream Strada oversocks feel like a proper throwback to the old days now that even shoe coverings are increasingly soaked in hi-tech features, but they’re still a valid and cheap option. They do their job well when it’s chilly yet dry. These neon ones have inbuilt visibility too. They do however fall prey to the usual material oversock failings by not being good in anything wet, quickly wearing on the sole and keenly holding onto road dirt.

Here to fill the shoulder seasons (should that be ankle seasons?) either side of fitting a chunky, weatherproof overshoe or swapping to dedicated winter boots, the DeFeet Slipstream Strada is a nylon and Lycra oversock designed to fit over your summer shoes to keep them shiny clean and your tootsies warm.

Coming in three sizes, the DeFeet Slipstream Strada seem to fit on the baggy side. These M/L socks to fit 40-43 shoes were a little loose over a wide pair of size 41s. This made them easy to take on and off and to fit over any shoe tensioning architecture, but the fit wasn’t snug if you’re after aero gains or a neat look. They were slack enough for there not to be enough stretch over the front of the foot and for little pointy canards to form either side of the toes which looked a bit odd – these may have helped with speed and lift mind you.

If this yellow is a bit much for you, they’re also available in black, white and a grey wool version. To help with visibility, the ‘D’ logo on the toe and rear of the cuff is infused with glass beads for nighttime reflectivity.

The Slipstream Strada oversocks differ to the original DeFeet Slipstream models in that they already have reinforced holes for the cleat and heel rather than the cutting guides of the latter. This makes initial use faff free and requires only the minimal amount of massaging to get everything in the right place. The cleat hole looks small but stretches easily over any triangular shaped cleat and fits snugly without hindering pedal engagement in any way.

The elasticated cuff is a healthy 120mm high so they extend a good length up the shin, effectively covering a sock and thereby removing the fashion faux pas of it peeking out from underneath. They reach nicely up to greet the bottom of a 3/4 short, leaving very little shin gap exposed to chill – ideal for those for those seeking to postpone the swap into full longs.

The 92% nylon and 8% Lycra material of the DeFeet Slipstream Stradas is of a pretty chunky construction, making for a toasty oversock compared to many others I have accumulated over the years. This makes them noticeably warm if you wear them in temperatures in the mid-teens, but it does extend their effective use into far lower temperatures and they’re still good to slip on when it drops well into single figures. But only when it’s dry. For while they’re sufficiently windchillproof, their weather resistance stops there.

They’re not designed for anything wet, or much above mildly damp. Being just a nylon/Lycra mix, they don’t have any pretentions towards having water resistant properties. The Slipstream Strada will happily splash through the odd puddle and be stoic against a light drizzle, but once they get wet, they’ll stay. On the wrong day that can lead to the opposite of their desired purpose by making your feet get colder. Cool dry days are fine, as long as you avoid any deep puddles.

Also – rather unfortunately for an item that’s generally to be worn in the grotty corners of the year – they don’t hold up to well against pervading grime. But that’s not a shortcoming specific to the DeFeet Slipstream Stradas. All oversocks eventually succumb to the onslaught of road freckles and puddle grime. Being a woven fabric, dirt likes to snuggle down in there, and it doesn’t always come off in the normal cycle kit wash, so you’ll need to get busy with the Vanish if you want to keep them looking fresh, or just give in to the patina as a measure of miles ridden.

Being a tech-lite, feature-free oversock, the DeFeets also suffer the same fate of every other fabric oversock I’ve used in that the base can wear through quickly. The underside of the sock isn’t reinforced, so it doesn’t take long for a hole to appear in the toe of the putty-down foot (track-standers at junctions be smug now), and if you walk around in your road shoes, or there’s a long trudge to the mid-ride cafe or whatever, then you’re going to make their bellies look tatty fast. The hole for the heel tab means the rear of the sock is faring better though and isn’t showing any damage.

Value

The most similar footwear to the DeFeet oversocks are the GripGrab Flandrien Waterproof Knitted Road Shoe Covers which are over twice the price, but despite seeking to justify that with the promise of weather resistance, reviewer Ed found they didn’t really deliver. They do come a long way up the leg though and have sole reinforcements, but they’re nowhere near as weatherproof as their name might suggest.

If you wanted to wear the Belgian Bootie heritage on your feet as well as on your sleeve then Prendas have their Omloop Van Vlaanderen Race Cordura Oversocks in yellow decorated with the Belgian flag and Lion of Flanders. They’re half the price of the DeFeet shoe coverings but are still made from a Cordura yarn and have cleat and heel holes.

For a similar price to the DeFeets, Le Col will do you their Oversocks which they say are warm and windproof thanks to their honeycomb construction and tightly woven Cordura yarn. Strong and abrasion resistant, the sock’s tube construction around the calf lends the sock some aerodynamic qualities and it comes in a range of colours too.

For less money, you could have the Boardman Cycle Overshoes which offer warmth, a more significant degree of weather resistance and reinforced sections on the sole for a bit of longevity. They only come in black with reflective highlights though and are more of an overshoe than a sock.

Conclusion

I’ve always been a big fan of the old school oversock, but I’m also a happy convert to the more modern shoe coverings that offer more extensive weather protection and longevity. For what they are, the DeFeet Strada Slipstream Stradas are good oversocks, as long as you’re happy to ride within their limits of when it’s cold but dryish.

They’re a thick material so cosy warm, a quality helped by them reaching a good way up the calf, effectively cutting out lower leg chill. The holes for cleat and heel tab are a nice touch, but their sizing could be a little snugger, and, like any Belgian bootie, can wear quickly at the toe and start to look grubby quickly with road grime.

Verdict

High cuff and thick fabric make them warm in the dry, but don’t expect much weather resistance

Tell us how the product performed overall when used for its designed purpose

There’s not much an oversock needs to do. It’s a cheap, low tech item to keep your feet warm when it’s cold but dry. They did this very well but did succumb to the usual oversock shortcomings of wearing through the sole and getting grubby quickly.

Tell us what you particularly liked about the product

Thick warm fabric, high cuff, colour.

Tell us what you particularly disliked about the product

The fit on our 41 shoes was a little slack. The usual poor sole wear and ability to absorb road dirt.
