“People see that space as belonging to the driver, and that’s a mentality we have to change,” says Cyclehoop founder Anthony Lau, who reckons SUV-shaped bike storage could be the future…
Happy St Patrick’s Day everyone! And to celebrate, your resident Irish live blogger Ryan has kindly given up his day off to keep you up to speed with all the latest cycling news and views. And the occasional Sean Kelly tribute, of course
Currently, more than 2,300 people are on the waitlist while 1,000 more have requested for a cycle hangar in their area, meaning the City of Edinburgh Council would need to install around 560 hangars to meet the demands
Residents say they should be allowed to “decorate the hangars tastefully” with mural-like artwork and to reduce the size of the “enormous” chevrons used to alert motorists to the storage units
The local authority emphasised that there were "no objections" prior to its installation and there had been "hundreds of requests from across the city" asking for more secure on-street bike storage
“For all the cycle lanes and LTNs to encourage people like me to cycle, and then raise the price, I can’t afford it frankly,” one cyclist said, after Cyclehoop announced that the price of storing a bike in its hangars will rise from £12 to £72 a year
The council project, backed by the police who hope it will help protect against bike theft, has not gone down well with some locals
“As a principle, bike parking should be cheaper than parking a car, they take up much less public space than a car, they don’t cause any congestion or air pollution”
The crushed hangar, which sparked a backlash from furious motorists after it was installed in a car parking space last year, was removed at the weekend, but no bikes were damaged or stolen
Brighton and Hove City Council has been accused of “misleading” the public over the incident, which is the latest in a growing list of controversies surrounding the new hangars
