It's a difficult time as the kids are going through huge growth spurts at that age, so investing in a decent bike to last can be a challenge. You may be like me last year, where Louis (12) was on the cusp of fitting an adult bike, so we opted for a second-hand Carrera TDF and tweaked the seat/stem to improve the fit. That lasted until this year and his height has grown so much that he's just inherited my 58cm Cannondale.
A second-hand 'stop-gap' might be the answer - although the Carrera range get some stick, they are robust and although they carry some weight the kids at this age cope with them fairly well - their lightness seems to compensate (but that's a whole different thread). Importantly the Carrera bikes are cheap second-hand.
Nothing else comes close to Islabikes for value and all-round capability IMHO - can race road, cyclocross, fit panniers etc to tour....
Boardman SPORT/e is £329 at Halfrauds. The cheapest Giant Avail is £499. Genesis Col du Glandon 650b is £599, HOY Cammo 650c is £600.
