Greg James has raised more than £4m for Comic Relief after completing his 1,000km country-crossing tandem charity cycle.

Over eight days, the BBC Radio 1 DJ cycled from the south coast of England to the Scottish capital, tackling the lumps, bumps and headwinds of the UK on a tandem bike. At the finish the total raised was around £3.3m, before it continued to rise above £4m in the minutes afterwards.

James was joined by several famous faces during his Comic Relief challenge, sharing the tandem with cycling royalty in Geraint Thomas and actual royalty in Prince William.

Visibly emotional at the finish, James pushed ahead with the challenge even with his dad receiving treatment in hospital having recently suffered a stroke.

“I can’t believe it, what a beautiful day, this is unbelievable,” James reacted immediately after crossing the finish line. “What a stupid idea […] please, let me off this bike.

“It feels amazing to complete that, it feels amazing to have done that adventure, it feels amazing to be part of an amazing team, it feels amazing to have raised so much money and it feels amazing to be finished. It’s been such a struggle at times, everyone has got me through all of it.

“The thing I will remember the most is the joy of seeing everyone and I just tried to push through the pain to get to that joy and there was so much joy on that whole journey. It was long and it was deliberately stupid to make a lot of noise but there was so much joy on the roadside, so many amazing people, I will never ever forget it.”

The 1,000km route set off from Weymouth in Dorset last Friday and passed through Bristol, Wales, Birmingham, York and Sunderland, before crossing into Scotland on Thursday, leaving the Radio 1 DJ with 40 miles to tick off into Edinburgh this morning.

James completed the ride with some iconic shades, gifted to him by British Cycling great Thomas when the 2018 Tour de France winner hopped on the tandem to provide some much-needed assistance.

In Yorkshire, Prince William surprised James with some support and joined the challenge for a half-hour stint.

“I didn’t kill the future king,” a relieved James commented after Prince William’s departure from their spin. “That’s the tightest I’ve grabbed the handlebars for the whole week.”

During the live stream the Prince of Wales told James, “What you’ve done is set an example about helping out. That’s the thing.

“It’s volunteering some of your time, putting yourself through a bit of pain at the same time, and supporting others. It’s something we do very well in this country, but we don’t really shout about it enough.”
