Our Near Miss of the Day series features close calls with drivers the vast majority of the time – on this occasion, the operator of a wheelie bin rather than a motor vehicle was responsible for a near miss that could have been far worse had it not been for some quick thinking, and quick braking.
road.cc reader Mark was turning right out of Cassiobury Drive and into Bellmount Wood Avenue in Watford on his regular morning commute to work, with a bin lorry up ahead on the right. Out of nowhere, a wheelie bin was launched across the road, leaving very little time for Mark to react.
“[I] don’t remember too much about what was said at the time, I did call out a ‘whoaahh'”, Mark told road.cc.
“The refuse collector did apologise and said he didn’t see me – although without eyes-on-sticks, I don’t know how else he might’ve seen what was around a corner?
“I did think about raising a complaint with the council, and also reporting it to the police – I have reported other near misses – but I didn’t think it would have been worthwhile.
“I really did not expect a wheely bin to be “thrown” at me, but hey, my brakes worked well and I wasn’t hurt. But very close.”
A spokesperson from Veolia, which operates Watford Borough Council’s bin collections, said: “We work closely with Watford Borough Council to ensure the safety of all road users during our collections, and we sincerely apologise to the cyclist for this incident. The health and safety of our people and the public is always our top priority.
“We have launched a full investigation into the incident, and our teams will receive additional training to reinforce the importance of our safety procedures.”
> Near Miss of the Day turns 100 – Why do we do the feature and what have we learnt from it?
Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we’ve decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on.
If you’ve caught on camera a close encounter of the uncomfortable kind with another road user that you’d like to share with the wider cycling community please send it to us at info@road.cc">info@road.cc or send us a message via the road.cc Facebook page.
If the video is on YouTube, please send us a link, if not we can add any footage you supply to our YouTube channel as an unlisted video (so it won’t show up on searches).
Please also let us know whether you contacted the police and if so what their reaction was, as well as the reaction of the vehicle operator if it was a bus, lorry or van with company markings etc.

It definitely was a dumb move from a worker, but I’m always covering the brakes anyway when passing a bin lorry – especially if I’m overtaking traffic waiting to pass while I can squeeze through.
They’re like school buses, there’s a strong chance someone will suddenly cross the road from behind the truck. Good job by Mark anyway, I’d usually expect people to walk across the road, not run/roll!
Yes I do the same. Slow down and cover brakes whenever near a refuse lorry, bus, school collection / drop off areas, takeaway outlets.
Presumably the worker would have received training in how to behave around traffic.
It was indeed a rubbish manoeuvre.
