i’ve had hot-spots caused by the cleat position not being quite right for my foot putting pressure in the wrong part of my sole, a subtle adjustment has cured it, also cleat bolts that are a bit too long and causing a precise pressure point have also encouraged hot-spots, putting a washer under a bolt to space it out or making the bolts shorter has cured the problem

i’d happily pay to ride a sportive on closed roads (assuming they stay closed, unlike the Etape Cymru this year) but to pay someone for the pleasure of riding open roads is something i’ll continue to avoid doing, especially as the prices are extortionate when compared to similar yet considerably better organised events on the Continent

also i don’t mind pouring over a map to work out an enjoyable route, which is something you’re paying a sportive organiser to do for you if you can’t be bothered with that, a ‘trail-centre’ mentality for roadies if you will, although some of the routes they’ve chosen in areas i know well have left a lot to be desired, often using main roads where quieter roads run parallel

bear in mind that a lot of sportive riders haven’t come up through, or don’t want to be a part of ‘club culture’ and don’t know how easy it is to go for a ride with other cyclists for free and spend a sportive entry fee on a huge amount of cake halfway round the ride

i have a computer on both my road and MTB bikes, and sometimes the CX bike, if i want to fixate on the figures i look at it and worry about speed and distance and all that sort of stuff.
and handy when racing as you can see time/distance left to run.

if i want a nice ride i just don’t look at it, simple, well maybe when i get home and see i’ve done x amount of miles and had fun doing it

“There are many corollaries
“There are many corollaries to Godwin’s law, some considered more canonical (by being adopted by Godwin himself) than others. For example, there is a tradition in many newsgroups and other Internet discussion forums that once such a comparison is made, the thread is finished and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever debate was in progress. This principle is itself frequently referred to as Godwin’s law.”

the “don’t want a tattoo don’t win” isn’t a lot of nonsense, it’s a tradition in these kinds of races, and up til now no winner has refused the tattoo or branding most of whom are a lot more used to winning, and in a lot fiercer competitions, than the Rapha riders

any rider that wins any race and can’t be arsed to stand on the podium and claim their prize, whatever that may be, tattoo or not, shows no respect for the race or their fellow competitors or the organisers, and in this case the tradition of the tattoo, whether you like it or not, a lot of people that haven’t posted on the internet have lost all respect in these Rapha riders

your argument is made null
your argument is made null and void thanks to Godwin’s Law 🙂

plenty of people have singlespeeded their geared bikes in a similar fashion for such events the Rapha riders are not so special and everyone knows the “Win = Tattoo” tradition, those who don’t want it simply don’t win, there have been people in 1st who have hidden in bushes until the next rider has passed them to avoid the branding

other Pro riders have taken part in similar ‘fun’ events and won and had the dignity to suffer the tattoo, Travis Brown and Adam Craig for example, but then they are pros

all very lovely but i think Rapha-Focus might have shot them selves in the foot with their performance at the SSCXWC the other weekend.

if you’re going to win at least have the respect to turn up for the podium, and at least man up to the tattoos that you know beforehand are awarded to the winners

i’m no legal expert but i guess, if true, that the issue is with the “identical jerseys” bit in terms of looks, the cost isn’t relevant, no matter how much people want it to be

pedals – i’ve seen Crank Bros
pedals – i’ve seen Crank Bros pedals explode on a ride and heard enough stories of them breaking to avoid them at all costs, and Speedplays are lovely once you’ve got used to the pedaling-on-ice float feel, but the metal cleats are fiddly to set up, clunky to walk in and expensive to replace.
Looks are popular but the cleats are made of cheese, if you’re used to the feel of Times i can recommend the new I-Clics as they’re stupid easy to click in and out of.

shoes – decide on a budget and find which ones fit you the best, if it’s Sidi throw that budget out the window and buy them anyway 😉
