Aviation certification is a mess. Many light aircraft still use magnetos, which fell out of use in cars in the 1930s I think. It’s easier to fit a full glass cockpit than a simple electronic ignition upgrade, because engine mods are so expensive to certify.

However, lead pollution from old light aircraft isn’t much of a problem because there are few of them, they don’t fly much and the pollution disperses in the atmosphere. Private flying has about a 5:1 mucking about to actually doing it ratio, and that’s a good thing.

No I don’t have any spare wheels.

Wheels can be expensive but a humble spare one can be very handy. Perhaps it’s just me, but I’ve had pawls and spokes break without warning, and then had to wait for parts / the weekend / competence to fix them. My spare rear wheel was £60 and it’s frankly a bit crap but it works and has kept me rolling a few times when my slightly less crap main one has been out of service. Worth considering.

This hardly makes sense, as I am one of the outspoken proponents of helmets on here, and never ride without one!

Perhaps I wasn’t very clear… I was reminded of that as a contrast: as I say, I disagree with it but understand why people make it. But on your point: what is the negative impact of telling people where you’re going?

Oh dear! Not this again (usually, it’s in connection with mountaineering or even walking). An alternative view is: don’t ever do that, as I have never done.

I completely fail to see why not doing this is of any benefit at all. If you think you might be safer, or if someone you care about wants to know, then tell them. Costs nothing and might at least add domestic harmony. It’s unlikely to save your life but probably has a positive cost benefit case.

You remind me of the “helmets make you less safe” argument. I don’t agree with it but do see what the idea is, in contrast to your point here.

Bill Bryson’s A Short History of Nearly Everything is very good on Midgely – but then it’s very good on nearly everything. Highly recommended and should be read by everyone in the entire world. Twice.

    Applecross has just the two
Applecross has just the two ways in and out, and sometimes people don’t realise that the coast road means just as much climbing as the Bealach na ba, it’s just more spread out in lumps rather than in a single bonkers climb.

Last time I was there (a long time ago) there was some camping, I think associated with the Applecross Inn, which is pretty much the hub of everything there.

You probably know this already but distances between settlements are often long, and what might seem to be a village on the map can be just a couple of houses with nowhere to buy food and drink.

Agree with all this. I don’t understand why people have combined cameras and lights. I have good lights; I’d like good cameras and don’t much want to pay again for less good lights.

And I dunno why apps help anyone. Move the video file to a computer using a cable and edit it there with any software. Perhaps I’m just a curmudgeon.
