I considered bringing in Bernal fro Gibbons but unfortunately decided to stick with the team I had.
Not too bad though, I had 1,2,3,7 + Degendt.

Dr Winston wrote:A very big drop for a quick step rider. I assume they tried to get him back on did they?…or is he not quite right? It didn’t surprise me, I don’t think he is very good in hilly terrain and the team wouldn’t have been able to bring him back to the peloton. Bauhaus got dropped a bit later and his team left him behind.
Greipel got dropped a lot later but had all his team (except Barguil) bring him back on the descent.

I think the results are still wrong.
I have a picture of number 171 finishing near the top 10.
171 is Bevin, Owsian is 174
also Greipel is 231 not Moinard

Dr Winston wrote:I think it safe to say we learned something these past two races. Bernal is going to be very fond of nicking the odd few seconds in the sprints. Wasn’t sure if Paris/Nice was just a case of the opportunity presenting itself in the winds but today showed maybe not.He is also good at sneaking into the top10 in sprints.
I was considering dropping Degendt and bringing in Bernal for today’s stage for exactly those reasons.

Condor Andy wrote:I have De Gendt in my purist, didn’t expect him to feature in the finish today! Hell of a ride.Might not tweak my team too much for tomorrow and make more transfers for stage 3.
I swapped Degendt out for Quintana in my purist 🙁
I was expecting something from Gibbons today but have a feeling he might be struggling with illness, if he was OK I would have expected Dimension Data to help out the chase.
Turns out Gibbons had a mechanical with 2.5km to go.

Condor Andy wrote:Some dude got over 90 either last year of the year before. De Gendt today will pick up….I’ll score when I get home, but 35+10+5+5+6+other intermediate sprint result that I missed+top points one climb+2nd points other climb+top points on minor climb ~ 80 points maybe.I have him on 90, too bad there isn’t a combativity competition with that he would have made 100.

Dr Winston wrote:well he’s a marked man for the rest of this tour for certain. I doubt we’ll be getting any more breakaway KOM points.Degendt will struggle on Stages 3 & 4, I expect he will lose the jersey on Wednesday and maybe go for the break on Thursday to collect KoM points and then try and win another stage on Friday or Saturday.
Hodeg got dropped mid-race.

Pretty sure the initial results are wrong.
It was Aristi 5th not Bizkarra and Van der Licke was 9th, McCarthy 10th, Bevin 11th, Caruso 12th.
I think I’m happy with that even though Gibbons went missing.
I was tempted to include Bernal from the start but that would have meant dropping Degendt.
What is the most a rdier has scored on a stage over the years?
Degendt must come close with today’s tally.

Dr Winston wrote:Well played Minardi. Will he be a serial breaker?Cuadros ?
He was been in breaks on a few occasions previously.
I have doubts whether he will be able to stick with Degendt & Gougeaard if they up the pace.
Tomorrow will be different break riders as there are no serious KoM points on offer.

Dr Winston wrote:Well i put TDG in anyway because if he is planning on another KOM raid this is a big stage. If not he’ll be first out.Other than him winning KOM I can’t see why they’re even there apart from turning their legs over.
I have Degendt in my standard team too but dropped him from my purist team. A lot less KoM points on offer in this race.
I had Cuadros in my standard team too but dropped him for Vakoc.
I can’t see QS chasing for sprints in stage 5 & 6 and think they will try and get someone in the break, Vakoc can also sprint if Hodeg is dropped but going on my recent form Vakoc will probably score nothing all race.
Both Degendt and Cuadros are in the break.

Dr Winston wrote:Aye…he doesn’t always perform. Quite an odd team really for this race, it looks more like a training exercise than a serious attempt at winning.Lotto Soudal are mainly using the race as a training exercise with riders free to ride their own race.
I don’t expect to see Hodeg sprinting for the win on stage 2, I think there will be a sprint from a reduced bunch.

My last minute changes a disaster again.
Alaphilippe/Maestri out for Viviani/Roelandts in.
How did I win this competition last year ???

My team for Milan-Sanremo
My team for Milan-Sanremo
VIVIANI
EWAN
TRENTIN
DEGENKOLB
CORT
ROELANDTS
ROWE
BETTIOL
A few of those should go on to the next few races and hopefully save some transfers.
Bettiol there in case a small group gets away.
Alaphilippe out for Viviani allowing me to pick Roelandts over Maestri.

With the look of the teams
With the look of the teams this year I think it is almost certain a group of ‘climbers’ get away.
It will then depend whether they can work together to stay away and whether the chasing group can work together to catch them.

Condor Andy wrote:TT isn’t a huge money spinner, and if you miss the mark it can cost in the end. I’ve ruined many a TT in the past.As it happens I decided Dennis would be on better form than Campanaerts based on days raced this year and, well……
I agree ITTs can be a bit hit and miss. The other year when the mountain stage was cancelled I ended up with loads of transfers left and brought in loads of ITT riders for this stage. Half of them didn’t make top 10 and sticking with GC guys would have been better.
