I got a reflective Respro
I got a reflective Respro after the Bunscombe fire, riding home on the Sunday evening was hard, breathing in thick, pollution laden fog. I just couldn’t breathe, proper scary, chipped off the ride to work on the Monday and got me the mask on the way to work on the Tuesday morning.
Wore it for a bit, not pleasent, hot and sweaty, the nose rubs, not too easy to breathe. I couldn’t drink or spit while riding, which I found to be very annoying.
I got some Techno filters and valves, just in case. One morning when weather woman Carol warned of very high pollution I wore it, still an awful experience.
Try and modify the route so it’s slightly greener, quieter and less polluted, if possible, might be a better proposition.
Oh, and my liking for facial hair probably makes the benifits of the mask redundent. With any sort of beard/moustache (even light stubble) the H+S people will not do a face fit test with a standard mask, and to do my job they purchased a powered respirator for me. A much more pleasent experience, until you forget about it, and break wind, the position of the power unit means that the smell reaches you very quickly.

I’d clean everything,
I’d clean everything, including the cage, replace the bearings, grease up everthing and rebuild, but it won’t be great and will not last long, especially with the recent soggy weather. Then plan on getting the whole headset replaced, something with good seals. Buy it through your LBS, organise a day for them to install and you minimise hastle. Bike shops are a bit quieter this time of year too.

Have you looked at the 5 10 freerider eps, also in mid/high. Ugly as hell, but insulated and more weather resistant than standard.

As soon as I start riding
As soon as I start riding especially in the cold it just comes up my throat, if I swallow it I get an awful stomach. There is a lot of it.
I ride solo and I spit, never figured how to do the nose blast so use a handkerchief and tissues if I have a cold. With an occassional wipe with the glove when my nose runs, which then gets wiped on the shorts.
I’m on a road or in the woods.

Indeed Welsh boy, I had a train/off road commute and when very cold, and I’d already done the thermal insoles and good merino socks, the Hot Hands foot warmers are wonderful, my feet don’t stay as warm as my hands with good gloves on.
Cold train platforms suck the heat from the feet, train delays make it much worse.
It was a bit ridiculous to use 2 bags worth in a day and I found that if I wore some in the morning and when I got to work I would double bag them in zip loc bags and put them on in the evening and they would warm up and get me home with warm toes.
Oddly, I find they keep all of my toes warmer if I have the flat end forward.
I noticed Decathlon do 15 packs for £10, and they advise putting them on the top of the foot/sock.
I tried to use foil under the insoles but it destroyed itself after one ride, I must try foiled mylar from a huge crisp packet at some point.

Thank you Organon, I had
Thank you Organon, I had never heard of the term Nesh. Learn something new every day.
Wiki has-
Nesh is an English dialect adjective meaning ‘unusually susceptible to cold weather’ and there is no synonym for this use. Usage has been recorded in Staffordshire, the East Midlands, Lancashire, North Wales, South Yorkshire and Shropshire. There is a similar term nish used in Newfoundland.
The word comes from Old English hnesce meaning feeble, weak, or infirm and is a cognate with the 16th century Dutch word nesch typically meaning damp or foolish. The Oxford English Dictionary notes that some etymologists have suggested a connection with Old High German nasc, meaning ‘to eat dainty food or delicacies’ (the origin of the word nosh), but it dismisses this connection as “unlikely”.
Nesh was added, in 2011, to the British Library ‘wordbank’, a project to preserve regional dialect words and phrases

It’s nice to have something
It’s nice to have something shiny and new, but have you thought about 2nd hand. You will get more bang from your buck, you will have to do more maintenance and learn it quicker, but if you talk to your Local Bike Shops, they might have a few in from part exchange. Less likely to be stolen, and easier to ask for help with fixing. It will help you to develop thet relationship too.
Best of luck whatever you decide.
The cold is easy to deal with, good gloves a must, you will generate a lot of warmth. But ice is not much fun.

But I know what you mean.
Good luck, difficult choices.

I have only just retired my getting to work bike earlier this year, ’91/2 Marin Pine mountain, purchased 2nd hand before I moved to Brum in ’97. Still had 3×7 and cantis, though changed from DX to XT and curves. Had to retire her, Mavic stopped making the XC 717 26 inch rim brake rim. Everything had been replaced at least once, apart from the frame, even changed the cable guide under the bb about 8 years ago, the rear cable had worn through.
Good XT 8 speed casettes were becoming very expensive as well, and SRAM had stopped making good 8 speed chains.
Best £250 I had ever spent.
I still have some Pearl Izumi tops from the early 00s, though could have been late 90s.
