There was quite a bit of “site maintenance” and all comments from the last eighteen hours seem to have disappeared.

    Not shakedry, just goretex

Not shakedry, just goretex active, but wishing to keep it going, proper paranoia, I will scrouplously clean the fabric conditioner drawer, which I might not always do with most of my cycle wear, then do at least one load of cycle wear (delicate washing liquid) with an additional rinse, only then will I risk the waterproof, and only use specific waterproof liquid, or pure soapflakes.

Any traces of softener will destroy waterproofing.

That coal, oil any gas is going nowhere, it’s been there for millions of years and it will still be there IF we ever desperately need it.

    A fine answer from Duncanap

A fine answer from Duncanap there, I have Hope Tech3 E4s on my ultimate commuter, I had hoped that they were a bit fit and forget, but they seem to need some maintenance.  I should clean and silicon lube (very sparingly) the pistons more than I do.

There was a bloke that came to service the bikes at work, he mentioned that I should probably change the fluid in the system, but shortly after that I snapped the frame, but I still got the bleed kit in preparation. Took 8 months to get a new frame, warranty, but mid worldwide bike boom, once built I did notice sponginess on the rear.  Time to start doing stuff.  Good videos from Hope.

Flushed the system, Dot fluid, fairly creamy, then bled a week later just in case.  Pistons needed a bit of effort.

The thing with my disks is they still work quite well even if they need a bit of work.  I will try and do the pistons every 3 months, or if changing pads or if things get a little scrapey, and change fluid at least once a year.  Bleeding if necessary.

I think Dot tends to attract water, don’t know how it gets in there but it does.

Hopes bleed kit is a beauty, and I got a Park piston press, which helps.

Always do the squeeze while submerged test, that would have been an expensive waste.

It was mentioned, I think by Pilot Pete, that putting a rivet out and then in results in a less strong fix, I presume that Campy’s peening is just as strong as an unmessed rivet.

Cable oilers will prolong the useful life of your cables, they also allow the use of smaller runs of outer, meaning you can use up those many little bits you have sitting about.

    Hope have repeatadly replaced

Hope have repeatadly replaced the cables on my lights, only recently charged for it.  One of the reasons I went for their disk brakes, that and apparently they continue to support their old stuff, with parts availability, long after others seem to.

Chris King headset, proper quality and the excellent seals mean that they will last longer than any other, plus parts should always be there.

One advantage of my Rohloff is the lack of a need to constantly replace worn cassettes and jockey wheels, and the chain seems to last a long time too. Month and a half of an initially filthy commute, and it’s only just hit 0.25%.  I was waiting on a replacement frame last winter, but the shortest quality 8 speed chain only lasted 2 and a half weeks for the old getting to work bike.

Much as I think that the hype

Much as I think that the hype over driverless cars is ridiculous, there could eventually be some benefits.  For a computer POWER is not the answer.  The decision is one hell of a lot faster. There is no need to move the foot from the accelerator to the brake to even start the braking process.

Braking should start sooner, and (maybe, hopefully) they driverless vehicle will not be breaking the speed limit so that the initial speed and energy will be lower.
