Komoot – free for your local
Komoot – free for your local area and works offline
Google Maps also offers offline nav but it will only work for on-road routes
The only downside with Komoot is that there’s no option to set a privacy zone which means you should either start/end routes away from your house or not share them online.

I just don’t get the idling
I just don’t get the idling thing. There’s a bloke who drops his kid at one of the after-school clubs my son goes to and then sits outside with the engine idling for an hour (on his phone of course). And it’s an SLK 300 so not exactly frugal on the petrol. It’s not like you need the engine running to power the entertainment system or heated seats is it?
The difficulty with exclusion zones around schools is enforcement and exceptions. Obvs disabled children have to be driven in and they won’t necessarily be brought in the same car each time. And schools are in residential areas so residents need access. As do delivery drivers. The solution is probably a community approach run by the kids themselves but that would end up falling foul of being accused of being politicising schoolchildren.

Truly awe inspiring, although I didn’t know at the time what their mission was.I remember going to Greenham mid-70s and there was a C5 Galaxy doing a low pass and the crowd line was seriously close to the runway. I remember my 5yo ears being utterly battered by Vulcans & Lightnings, like you say, an awe-inspiring experience. They almost didn’t need to drop bombs those big V-bombers

Just after Shoreham I cycled to the Old Warden airshow for the final appearance of the Vulcan. Great thing about bikes is (a) you avoid traffic and (b) you can sneak into restricted areas and have a Cold War bomber batter you into the ground when the pilot sticks it on it’s tail for a fast climb. Epic experience.

Would be very odd if it was junction B, that’s just a bunch of connectors, no electronics/logic involved.
I’ve had similar with my old 6870 system, I resolved it buy unplugging everything from the battery (easy as mine was external) and plugging in each component separately and seeing if it powered/operated. Each of them was fine and when I cabled everything back up and plugged in to standard diagnostics (eTube) it all worked fine.
As most of the brains of the system is in the battery that’s always the place to start.

If the Triban 500 isn’t
If the Triban 500 isn’t available this is the replacement bike – £20 over your budget but well-specced and once again a good basis for upgrades

You’ll probably be a 58cm
You’ll probably be a 58cm frame or an XL in most modern geometry frames, particularly as you’re new to cycling and so won’t be riding in an aggressive head-down arse up position.
If you’ve got a Decathlon close by definitely go and have a look. Their bike guys are probably the best other than a local bike shop (LBS) and will be able to advise you. They’re also good for servicing and after-care. Unfortunately an LBS isn’t likely to have anything in your price range unless they take trade-ins from people upgrading.
Don’t be tempted to go for a disc-brake bike – it will blow your budget.
Deca have still got Triban 500s in stock in XL – https://www.decathlon.co.uk/triban-500-road-bike-red-id_8377759.html
That’s a cracking versatile bike with scope for upgrades if you get bitten by the bug.
I’d caution against buying on eBay unless you’re willing to spend a bit of money/time on fettling. If you do budget £30 for a toolset and plenty of Youtube time. And £50 for replacement parts.
DIY bike maintenance isn’t tricky as long as you’ve got the space and time.
The problem with eBay is that usually you can’t chuck a leg over it before buying so you need to know what size fits you and invest some time in understanding component levels.

I like the JRAs, and the flexibility available to have differing rim depths F&R for example.
Those Wheelsmith Zipp ‘tribute’ wheels look great for the money… dimpled too for added bling.
Halo Carbauras are also worth considering. https://www.halowheels.com/carbaura/
I also got drawn into the dark side of eBay… if you are prepared to take the risk of the history. Some great wheels available for similar money (I was outbid on some nice Enve 3.4s for under £1k)
Set of barely used Hadrons went for about £500 a couple of days ago, silly money

Nick T wrote:I would never have the gall to ask everyone I know to donate in order for me to do something I want to do anyway. 100 mile bike ride you say? Don’t you do that most weeks anyway? Oh this one’s supposed to be different, is it?I think it has to be a genuine challenge of the “oh fuck what have I signed up for” type. One that requires training and even then you might not make it – like a running marathon, or a full iron-man, or a 100-miler if you’ve not done one before.
I did RL46 a couple of years ago and it never crossed my mind to do that for charity – it was a stretch for me but something I’d done before. Now I’ve signed up to do a 100-miler (not RL) I am doing it for charity as I’m genuinely not sure I’ll be able to complete it and will need the motivation. Longest ride to date is 60 miles so some serious training is required.
