not so far noticing less or
not so far noticing less or better driving – you have to wonder what it would take for this to happen and when/how the effects will be felt individually.
It’s a crude, regressive rise, affecting the poorest folk first and presumably leaves the richest able to carry on, perhaps with even more road space to tear up. Do the poorer people just not travel, or do they go by other means?
Do you pay your £55 to fill up from one-quarter and go ouch “then” or does it hit (mentally) at month-end? Or what? What other (discretionary) spend is curtailed?

it’s not about convenient
it’s not about convenient personal travel, this.
I was in Shropshire in late September ’21 – the petrol queues and the angst all seemed to be mainly coming from super-connected London and the south-east.
things seemed pretty chilled in rural Shropshire, considering you could get genuinely stuck around there if there was a real fuel shortage.

A favourite build of mine is my 1984 Raleigh Record Ace – the frame, brown cable housings, paint, decals and gold ESGEs are correct; the handlebars and levers aren’t too far off, but the wheels and drivetrain are 3x10s.

Chico, California.
Chico, California.
“Cleanup aisle 10”
EDIT : I paid a little Google car visit to this location and had a drive around the shopping area mentioned in the article. I’ve never been to America and I found a visit to the Council website interesting too, it’s a trees and cycling city, apparently.
In the shopping area, basking in the California sun, it’s so striking how medical care is sold as a commercial proposition; right next to the loud and proud tobacco store. There’s a car garage with a car wash and two drive-in fitting bays. The car wash part was more nicely built than your typical UK example.
From the Council website, you notice the environmental issues that they live next to – there’s a dam and the city of Paradise, up in the mountains, razed to the ground by fire and in the process of being rebuilt. Take the Google car up there and you get a mix of pre and post fire views.

Knoxbridge. Here’s the cafe
Knoxbridge. Here’s the cafe co-owner adding value to the whole thing: “The A229 is a dangerous road, it is notorious for accidents and fatalities. Due to it being very straight outside the cafe, motorists tend to gun it down the road.”
One day, a loss adjuster is going to say, “well, we can’t pay out for all of the damage here, you see it’s a dangerous road, and if you look at sub-clause 15(d)(h)(viii) you’ll see…”
