I used to have BB5s which were pretty dire and required constant adjustment. For the last year I have used Acor hydro/mechanical – same as juintech R1. They have been excellent – easy to set up and adjust, good modulation, hardly ever need adjusting etc. I think they were just over £100 for the pair. They’re cheaper, lighter and less clunky looking than Hy Rds.

Can you get the new hubs

Can you get the new hubs separately? I haven’t seen them yet

DT Swiss R460 are only about

DT Swiss R460 are only about £25 each from German suppliers or £35 from UK ones (e.g. SJS). You can buy sets built up from Cycle Clinic, Strada or most other wheelbuilders.

Or you could get any of the Kinlin-based sets from Cycle Clinic, Hunt or Superstar.

    I like the discobrakes pads.

I like the discobrakes pads. They’re progressive, soft (so don’t eat the rims too fast) yet quite long-lasting. Oh, and they’re cheap. Even on long drop brakes I can stop as quickly as you’d ever need to.

They’ve been great! They feel smooth, comfortable and fast. I’ve been using the 28s on DT R460s and they work really well. Had an issue with one wheel which meant I had to use an Open Pro – felt less stable and a narrower size would definitely work better for older 15c rims.
No punctures in about 1500 miles and they don’t seem to be very cut up despite the occasional off road excursion. I think the balance of durability, comfort, price and low rolling resistance is just about right. I don’t race but these were fine on a 180 mile ride on Saturday. The only problems were with failing self adhesive patches but that’s a separate issue!
Thanks to all who recommended them.

I have a Selle SMP Well which is great for me. No numbness or discomfort etc for me and feels like you sit “in” the saddle rather than on it.

I got it based on the recommendation from Steve Hogg’s bikefitting site: https://www.stevehoggbikefitting.com/bikefit/2011/09/all-about-smps/

    If anyone is looking for

If anyone is looking for cheaper tubeless tape, search eBay for Tesa 4289. It’s around £10 for 66 m and seems to be roughly the same as Stans etc

Excellent article which explains the “balance” principle that has been mentioned

    I have a carradice super C

I have a carradice super C SQR slim. If you keep an eye out on eBay carradice sometimes sell seconds – mine is riveted in one section because they weren’t happy with the stitching. I think it cost me about £50. It has a large main pocket with a compartment for wallet, keys etc and a central plastic strip on the underside which does a good job as a mudguard.

It’s very easy to clip on and off, is incredibly stable and I think it saved around half a kg when compared to my rack/ortlieb/mudguard setup I had previously.

The weight is central and I can’t say that I think the bike handles worse with the weight centred higher up than panniers. Recommended!

I like to use merino because I can use it quite a few times without it smelling – one of these mesh vests underneath could be just the ticket to stop the clammy feeling when I overheat a bit.

Do they need washing every time you use them? The only polypropylene clothing I have is a Helly Hansen, and that definitely does….
