The Reform Party and the UK’s lurch towards fascism

I posted an earlier version of this a while back – inspired to do update following THAT discussion about all things ULEZ.

The “manifesto”, in terms of transport, only mentions stopping HS2, but there’s plenty on the usual right-wing obsessions: Brexit, immigration, veterans and climate change.  I had another look because I worry about the ongoing decline of the two main political parties.

If the Cons stay wedded to Brexit, then we will go into the next GE with all the widespread impoverishment Brexit has ushered in – not helped by Covid, Putin, etc. People generally vote according to their pockets.  I don’t get Labour’s current position on Europe either, but let’s see how that evolves, and even the Cons may also evolve, or even pivot, but time is already running out for them.

Several roads now lead to the horrors of a further lurch to the right in this country.  Let’s hope Labour get the GE landslide the polls are predicting – but we’re still at least a year out from the real campaigning beginning.

A cycling angle? With the Reform Party and its ilk, Facebook Steve and Nextdoor Dave attain real political influence. It’s not spelt out in the manifesto, but you can see where this is probably heading and what it is likely to mean for cycling.  You can bet that this lot are very much “on the side of hard working drivers” etc.

As you all know, Dave’s going to “sort the traffic” and no doubt show them lazy planners how it’s done: Steve thinks the Council are corrupt, the police blinkered and is, if he can fit it in to his busy schedule he’s going to “teach them Lycra’s a thing or two.” It won’t concern him that his Mondeo is 3 months out of MoT or that Mrs Steve sometimes drives the kids in it uninsured.

As vulnerable road users, vulnerable people, we rely a great deal on the rule of law for protection. The rule of law means that we understand what the laws are, they are in general fair, and how they are applied and to whom is even-handed and consistent.

The fascist position is broadly the opposite – it’s all off-the-cuff to support today’s particular agenda – that’s why the Iain Duncan-Smith “happy to see ULEZ infra vandalised” comment is, as an example, so very worrying.  In the Conservatives, here is a party happy to send signals to enable the mob to attack RNLI stations, beat up immigrants, shout at teachers, doctors etc.

This right-wing stuff works by allowing/enabling significant privileged groups to to think of themselves as the downtrodden underdog and here is a way to fight back.  The pro Brexit campaign played on people’s ignorance, fears and prejudices exactly as this does.

It’s all about freedom, innit, less regulation, less tax burden, and damn the climate.  There’s more polar bears now, so it’s fine.  Let’s have open-cast coal mining, lithium mining and fracking. The section on climate change stumbles around like a Friday night drunk, trying to explain he wasn’t being racist to the barman – a denier position emerges, unsurprisingly.

In places, the mask really slips: “We must keep divisive woke ideologies such as Critical Race Theory (CRT) and gender ideology out of the classroom.” – to be honest, I don’t even know what those two are.

The standard enemies are put up – the civil service, the BBC.  Amid all the thrust and parry, there’s nothing  about making a better, more inclusive and cohesive world to live in; arts, sports and culture don’t feature in this barstool view of the world: a dullard’s grim vision.

Don’t be a member of the wrong sort of minority would be my advice, should any of this come to pass.

Skipper: Should councillors
Skipper: Should councillors resign if they can’t attend?

Finally a newspaper that’s not afraid to say what Nigel Farage has been saying all along; we need to stop this gravy train of politicians being elected, taking the pay and not representing the people……

Further exercises for readers
Further exercises for readers: will putting up Dutch or Danish (etc.) flags improve our roads and transport options?

As other posters found some time back the only political flag with a bicycle appears to be the one for Uttar Pradash’s Samajwadi Party (and not necessarily something everyone can get behind).

Perhaps an anarchist cycling collective one would be better?

I quite liked some of the Scottish “Pedal On Parliament” designs – “this machine fights climate change” was a good one but probably the best designs for mass appeal are those emphasising all-age mobility and transport, social cycling.

The BBC has finally spotted
The BBC has finally spotted the flag wars (the “conflict” mostly being in “left” or “centrist” politician’s heads as they try to work out a line on this. Kemi’s gone with a Maggie-style “rejoice. Just rejoice”)

Not much info in that article though. How much is the “extreme right wing”? They found some, but we don’t know. Why exactly do people feel that “the English” are being overlooked or ignored? Something something economic pain plus “immigration”? Not even those interviewed seem to know.

Or is it just the wholesale import of US “patriot culture”? After all, it’s quite normal to see the star-spangled banger displayed on every house some places there, and not just on national holidays either.

Well I was assuming it’s not

Well I was assuming it’s not a Spitfire because, as the other David pointed out, it’s all wrong for that.

A good example of AI
A good example of AI improving on human efforts – correctly spotting that a) a bomb bay could do double duty as an undercarriage well, saving vital weight AND space and b) a fast point-interceptor plane could also carry bombs while it was at it, also saving resources…

(Possibly another metaphor about some new “eyes” reviewing an existing system without specific knowledge of its workings and being able to find loads of simple ways to save “waste”…)

I don’t know what plane it is, but I would have thought that’s more likely a landing gear bay that they’ve forgotten to close, seeing as they don’t appear to have any anywhere else. Although given the rather peculiar looking propeller design I’m surprised they managed to fly at all.

But a Spitfire’s (which presumably it’s supposed to be) undercarriage folds up into its wings, not the fuselage, and if its wheels came out of that aperture it would inevitably crash when it landed. It appears that Mr Amos has taken something of which Britain can rightly be proud and mangled it with incompetence, ignorance and stupidity into something that could never work and that has the seeds of its own destruction designed into it. I’m sure there’s a metaphor there if you look hard enough…

Ignoramuses!  They have completely missed out the four additional lines on the ends of those they’ve drawn, making the traditional “good luck” symbol so beloved of true patriots.  And indeed drawn from our deep heritage.

Such a design could also incorporate the arrows showing the direction of circulation.  Of course, on the continent – e.g. Germany – they would point the other way to accord with their traffic rules.

I have to say that I’m again impressed by the surprising interest in vexillology – and indeed symbology in general – by the public.  I’d have expected them to be complaining about the price of petrol and the potholes but apparently they have far more academic interests.

Hmm – seems like in this

Hmm – seems like in this example, someone’s got there before them. Are we sure it wasn’t just someone implying that the roundabout was cancelled?

Weymouth: Concern as St George’s flags appear on roundabouts

A movement, which is fuelled by social media, has got the name Operation Raise the Colours and looks to urge members of the public to display St George’s and Union flags in public spaces as an act of patriotism.

England flags appear on

England flags appear on Worcester city streets for ‘unity’

Reform UK leaders, including Joanne Monk, leader of Worcestershire County Council, have also spoken in support of people flying the flag.

Mr Conway (organiser), a scrap trader, said he was proud to be English and British and added: “We love everybody. It’s about love and unity, nothing else.”

His sentiments were echoed by 59-year-old former builder, Paul Bullock, who said: “We are proud of what it means to be English. It’s not racism. We’re not football hooligans. My father fought in World War Two in the Navy, my uncle in Burma.”

sorry for the delay but the answer was in the next sentence: “The self-serving, self-entitled liberal elite”, that’s what.

He probably means things like natural justice, due process, the rule of law, fairness in the way crime is charged and is dealt with by the courts, sentencing – all that imperfect, difficult stuff. 🦘 I doubt he wants swifter justice for cyclists, by the way.

Indulge me for a moment, the next bit reminded me of a dressing p-down a group of us got from our headmaster: “They have let this country down. They have let the British people down.”

Our school only put up one team for Young Enterprise that year, and we were terrible. For me it was an early lesson in the effects of privilege – of course the local private school teams did better – connections and patronage etc. Our school was the location for the awards ceremony and the home team (not that anyone told us this) were expected to host it.  We decided to stay away.

Anyway:  Enough. Now is the time for Reform.”

Isn’t it cyclists who are all

Isn’t it cyclists who are all dressed in black?

Anyway, get ready for this tear-jerker:

Bournemouth: Safeguard Force ‘disheartened’ following meeting

Assistant Chief Constable Mr Callaghan added: “The organisers have been unable to provide reassurance that this group has sufficient safeguards in place to ensure volunteers are adequately vetted, trained, and equipped to undertake high-visibility patrols in the community.

https://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/25396195.bournemouth-safeguard-force-disheartened-following-meeting/

My Newsthump headline for next week is BOURNEMOUTH – Safeguard Force : penny reported to have “dropped”

“In a startling new development, it has been revealed that the Safeguard Group has taken up more police and council time in just a few weeks than a year’s worth of their activities (with a following breeze) might possibility ever have saved.
