A new catch-all Tea Shop thread for those miscellaneous new stories that don’t quite fit with parking, crashing into buildings or trapped/prisoners in their homes.

It’s a Brexit level of over-simplification the idea that car parking charges and retail prosperity are connected.

Okay, but one attacked a single cyclist, the other delayed multiple drivers!

It’s standard to have a
It’s standard to have a suspended sentence due to full prisons.
Although exceptions are made for hardened criminals such as Gaie Delap who is a clear and present threat to society.
You can tell by the eyes.

Yet another thug committing a severe unprovoked violent attack on a cyclist and receiving only a joke suspended prison sentence- why aren’t we surprised?

This turns out to be new parking charges – lower for locals higher for visitors in the south hams of Devon. All somehow getting equated with a Tourist Tax.

California Cross: Motorists
California Cross: Motorists issue stabbing threats over roadworks
At about 09:00 GMT on Wednesday, the force said it received reports of an assault on Church Lane.
A driver intentionally hit a road worker with their vehicle before fleeing the scene, the council said. The car’s registration number was given to the police.
On Tuesday, a different motorist threatened to stab a worker before speeding off while the crew were setting up traffic controls to close Nine Mile Ride.
Later, another driver threatened to punch a worker, the council added.

stonojnr wrote:they did a thing over 10 years back called Bike & Go, that were hire bikes akin to Boris bikes, just alot heavier for some daft reason and the hiring system was way more convoluted, so you couldnt just Bike & Go.
That was the one (same name in Scotland). Haven’t tried a Boris bike yet (or Ken/Khan-cycle ?) but my understanding is they’re conceptually different *.The “heavy” is because “public use bike” – they have to be a) “batteries included” eg. lights, lock built in etc. b) extra-robust to take the battering they’ll get, plus not desirable to steal. (Shared bikes are no good if trashed or stolen).
OTOH I think they used a design based on the Batavus Personal bike – which seemed on the heavy end even for a Dutch bike. Edinburgh ones did have 7 gears though – 6 more than the OV Fiets ones…
* As I understand it schemes like the London one are point to point – they *can* be good but are very costly to run (partly due to needing to relocate bikes). Also sometimes represent an effort to compensate for inadequate street level public transport. The Bike and Go one seems more like a (premature) attempt to import the Dutch OV Fiets public-transport-based system – basically last few miles *from* a station, and returning to the same one. This is ideal for places where a) cycling is normal and b) because of that you don’t want everyone taking their bike on the trains! So just cycle to the station, train or bus to destination station, then swipe your card and take a hire bike to the door. Reverse process to get back home.
I didn’t understand that until the scheme was on the way out.
