A new catch-all Tea Shop thread for those miscellaneous new stories that don’t quite fit with parking, crashing into buildings or trapped/prisoners in their homes.

    Residents tell of ‘nightmare

Residents tell of ‘nightmare traffic’ after road closure

“Just trying to get in and out of our driveways has become a nightmare – I’m really worried about motorbikes and e-scooters.

“When a driver stops to let you reverse you cannot see motorcyclists as they come down the road.

“Evening, trying to get on my drive I have had to put up with horn blasting and angry drivers.”

Another Upper Deacon Road resident of 21-years, who wanted to remain unnamed, said it took her around 25 minutes to travel less than a mile stretch of Upper Deacon road.

(One of the Spidermen didn’t turn up so I’ve gone with some cars from the actual article.)

Seems simple to me: make the parking spaces bigger (thus meaning there will be fewer parking spaces, since they’ll also have to be wider) and reduce the width of the carriageway.

Seems simple to me – stop using The Esplanade as a road / car park.

    Yup, that would work too;-)

I can’t park on my own street

I can’t park on my own street anymore – it’s all down to the tourists

With the town’s transformation, new challenges have emerged

Despite its picturesque countryside which now proves essential for Bruton’s economy, Andrew struggles to find parking space along his road.

    Next up: DOGE has discovered

Next up: DOGE has discovered that federal office employees take a whopping 40% of sick days on Mondays and Fridays.

Still, all this not flying straight could actually turn out OK for Musk and Trump.

Surely she could get some supplies in Calne?  There’s a bus … but of course, that only runs every 90 minutes it seems.  And it’s only 13 minutes cycle to the centre, or 21 minutes / 4.4 miles to the Tescos superstore!  But… look at the road you’ll be “sharing” (albeit for a short distance).

That’s the rub: in the countryside there aren’t so many people, so there aren’t the services (we’re all conditioned to expect, because the majority are urban).  So people want to drive out of the countryside for their supplies / amenities / jobs.

Of course this has been an issue since William Cobbett railed about it!  And after population drain from the villages to the suburbs, more recently there has been a (small) reverse migration by people to “nice places” out of town – because (via the motor vehicle) we can.

I don’t think anything much changes here in the foreseeable future.  Lost cause… but *if* there were only a cycle path a couple of miles to a nearby centre perhaps a few would use it?

Definitely take the car away and either crush it or sell it with the proceeds going to charities helping victims of road violence. Beyond that, I know it doesn’t exist at the moment but with the tagging technology available it would surely be possible to give someone a tag that would register if they were going above a certain speed and automatically notify the authorities, thereby banning them from travelling in motorised vehicles unless they applied to their probation officer for permission in advance to use public transport?

Her recent arrest comes after Hickling was caught committing the same offence on Westbrook Road, in Calne, just over a month ago, for which she spent four weeks in prison.

PC Oliver Venton commented: “Hickling showed a blatant disregard for the law when she chose to drive her car knowing she had recently gone to prison for the same offence. After being pulled over, she insisted that she was taking the driving ban seriously and that she had simply “pushed her luck” to drive to the shop.”

Businesses still seeing ‘drop in footfall’ at St Stephens Place

Ah dear old local journalism we rely on thee so much, powered as you are some times by anecdotes from individual employees and barrack-room lawyers in the comments.

Funny how this private car park concerns a local councillor and the newspaper – what separates it from say a customer complaint that the nachos at the cinema weren’t very nice or that the cinema shows too much Marvel and not enough DC?
