A new catch-all Tea Shop thread for those miscellaneous new stories that don’t quite fit with parking, crashing into buildings or trapped/prisoners in their homes.

“Because cars can’t come up the high street, it means people don’t see the town.”

Maybe this is just me, but I tend to be able to pay more attention to what’s on the high street when I’m on foot, than when I’m concentrating on driving.

    Driver whinge-fest here.

Driver whinge-fest here.  About what?  The pitch seems to be “I come here every day and I’m worried about the effect of the pot holes on my suspension” and repeat.

    “Don’t  live near a river,

“Don’t live near a river, then” would be the standard driver response when anyone else is affected by cars.

Public anger leads to extraordinary Tamar crossings meeting

Negative reaction to an unpopular proposal will see a joint Cornwall and Plymouth committee hold a special meeting in the new year

Not sure how holding another meeting is going to get you any closer to making ends meet, guys. A lot of bellyaching over an additional £14.40 per year by people who can afford to run a car, and clearly drive it regularly.

Actually if I means I can go

Actually if I means I can go past The Farmers Dog at full speed and not have slow down, here is one speed limit I’m opposed to.

Also, there was a story this week saying that he’d banned over 400 people – does anyone know if there’s a form you have to fill out, or something?

A man spent £30,000 of his savings on a failed legal battle “for justice” over a £100 speeding fine.
Richard Keedwell, 71, said a “seriously flawed” legal system meant fighting the fine had taken nearly three years and used up his sons’ inheritance money.
There is definitely something seriously flawed here Richard, but I don’t think it’s the legal system in this case. What a chump. Many years ago I got a ticket for entering a bus lane on my motorcycle (this was before nearly all bus lanes in London were opened to motorcyclists) and I thought of challenging it on the (true) grounds that I had moved into it to get out of the way of a blue light ambulance. Mrs H quite rightly dissuaded me by pointing out that a) I was legally in the wrong despite trying to do the right thing and b) “Think about how many times you’ve probably done something similar and got away with it”.

I’m not local nor have Ive

I’m not local nor have Ive not seen the application.  Is the application/s one without parking to encourage folk to shop local without impacting on the road network substantially or is it a development with parking sprawl which will cause problems like you describe, especially with that bypass enabling them to get out of town quickly.  Messed up parking standards without good alternatives (local shops and good public transport, just leads to uncontrolled parking sprawl too :-/

Maybe but the press will stir

Maybe but the press will stir it up into them being victimised (sit back and wait for it),  despite there usually being at least 110% + 2 mph leeway before being charged.

To be fair, the article says “some drivers were incorrectly identified as speeding after the limit had changed” – so the suggestion is they were abiding by the updated speed limit, but the cameras hadn’t got the memo yet.

On the other hand, the whole point of variable speed limits is that it allows you to set an appropriate speed in advance, to reduce the impact of something happening out of sight down the road – so a driver driving in excess of a variable speed limit 10 seconds before they were told would not necessarily have any visual cue to indicate their speed is too fast for the conditions.
