A new catch-all Tea Shop thread for those miscellaneous new stories that don’t quite fit with parking, crashing into buildings or trapped/prisoners in their homes.

Bit of a long read this, but
Bit of a long read this, but it seems like these parking restrictions have been subject to death by consultation, i.e. listening to drivers. Not sure what the consultation responses can have been – “I want to carry on parking illegally on street corners”?
Torbay double yellows ‘barely the length of a car’ slammed
“Did you run out of paint?”
He pointed out that there had been no recorded crashes at the Marldon Road junctions.
The Cabinet Member for Pride in Place, which includes Transport told DevonLive the previous council administration did not prioritise road safety markings. “As a result the council had no in-house line painting resource and this meant that existing road safety markings declined in condition and very few new road safety markings were able to be progressed,” he added.

‘Ridiculous’ Oxford car park
‘Ridiculous’ Oxford car park charges to increase from April
Graham Jones of ROX Backing Oxford Businesses said: “Parking charges are already ridiculously high – only the wealthy can really afford to park in Oxford these days.
“To put them up even higher when previously busy car parks are already sitting near empty, is ridiculous.
“But I think that’s what city councillors want. They want to see Oxford empty and people coming in by bus.”

Drivers go on repeating “the Council are hell-bent on destruction” line. Cars are only for the wealthy, are they, Graham? you’re this close to getting it.

Colchester speed bumps
Colchester speed bumps installed ‘too high’ by council
Traffic is almost being brought to a standstill because of the size of the speed humps which are 20mm too high.
They are forcing drivers to slow right down out of fear the bumps will damage the underside of their vehicles.
“I would advise people to be careful until they come out to fix the issue and it’s a shame it isn’t going to be sorted until next month.

And when it’s fixed, drivers won’t have to be careful any more. Happy days!

Drivers ignored road closures at Colchester Half Marathon
Kerry Tinker said: “Despite road closures being announced a head of time, I witnessed today marshalls being shouted at, one Marshall be hit by a car, and a car driving into runners.

The scene 100 years ago. The rise of mass motoring occupies the same time frame as the decline of the British seaside resort.

Having done a virtual drive along the Esplanade, the shorter spaces seem to be those around the Vue Cinema (formerly the Novelty Rock Emporium). I could see an X5 and an Évoque parked OK at the southern end, nearer to Harbour Light.
The Sunday roasts start at £20 a head at Harbour Light, so the initial £25 PCN sounds to me like something Phil should have should put down to experience, rather than allow to spoil his day.

They’re fining drivers who don’t fit their cars fully into the marked bays, but drivers are complaining that their cars are too big for the spaces.

Bid to stop controversial Bath LTN voted down
It has been popular on the road, but unpopular in the surrounding area
Local man Neil McCabe, who attended the meeting as a public speaker and is fundraising for a legal challenge to the liveable neighbourhood, said the decision was “disappointing but not unexpected.”
He said: “[The] next step is to seek our options on legal action both in terms of this was an unreasonable decision […], if they have breached transport law, and also if they have breached the equalities act.”
He added: “This is very much a community led thing and we do have lawyers involved in this who think our chances are pretty good.”

David9694 wrote:Public path across Christchurch civic centre car park could stop sale, claims Friar’s Cliff Residents AssociationHe added that there are “genuine, wide-ranging implications for anyone using the public right-of-way footpath and footways that connect Christchurch town centre to Two Riversmeet, Stanpit Marsh and beyond.”
Pointing out the footpath and footways were also part of the national cycling infrastructure, he said these would “likely be blocked by fencing off for construction”.
He should come to Bristol, where they’re more than happy to send cyclists on a “dismount for this hundred metres of footway” diversion because builders needed the three metres wide cycle path to store stuff for the new flats they’re building.
Or wait and see what happens if and when the Bristol —> Portishead railway line works actually starts: no way can they keep the cycle path from Pill to Portishead where it is, and there are no safe (off-road) alternative routes.

Public path across Christchurch civic centre car park could stop sale, claims Friar’s Cliff Residents Association
And a town councillor also said she believed BCP “did not realise” the path existed.
He added that there are “genuine, wide-ranging implications for anyone using the public right-of-way footpath and footways that connect Christchurch town centre to Two Riversmeet, Stanpit Marsh and beyond.”Pointing out the footpath and footways were also part of the national cycling infrastructure, he said these would “likely be blocked by fencing off for construction”.
Mr Alves said FCRA (Friars Cliff Residents Association) had raised its concerns with BCP at senior level, but “have not yet had an adequate response”.
Southampton estate agent instructed to sell Christchurch civic offices
“While the sale doesn’t include Bridge Street Car Park, public toilets and the public right-of-way to the west of the centre, it does come with Leisure Centre Car Park West.”
“Oh no”, said BCP council, “we’re literally the Highways Authority and we had no idea that the land we are selling where lots of us used to work had a footpath across it and now no-one will ever buy it. Curses – foiled!”. (The building is marked TH on the map.)

Overnight police operation installs controversial traffic scheme in Bristol
An overnight police operation took place in Bristol to finish installing a controversial Liveable Neighbourhood scheme.
The council, its contractors ETM, and Avon and Somerset Police arrived in Barton Hill at approximately 3am Thursday 13 March to install planters, bus gate signs and paint roads as part of the East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood scheme.
The installations took place in multiple locations at the same time.
Protestors arrived between 4 and 5am to attempt to stop works – but only succeeded in stopping the instalment of one bus gate at the junction of Marsh Lane and Avondale Road – where a group of women lay down in the road to halt contractors.
Work was abandoned at this junction – with a final “E” left to paint in a “BUS GATE” sign.
