A new catch-all Tea Shop thread for those miscellaneous new stories that don’t quite fit with parking, crashing into buildings or trapped/prisoners in their homes.

Woman claims Wales and West Utilities won’t pay to fix her car smashed by road sign

so your street parked “life”, “pride and joy” had two flat tyres when this happened and you’ve decided not to get the the glass done, even.

‘The 37-year-old said: “My car was undriveable at the time because I had two flat tyres and I had warned them: ‘Please don’t put your stuff so close to my car, it’s a custom car, it’s expensive, it’s my pride and joy, it’s my life because I’m disabled and I have got three kids.

“All I want is exactly what I had prior to the damage, and that’s what I’m entitled to. I’ve not had a car for weeks now, I’ve got three children and my partner works nights. It is not ideal before Christmas. What am I supposed to do? I’ve got to run around in taxis now. It’s ridiculous.

…I’ve been fobbed off with them telling me: ‘We’re not happy with this, we’re not happy with that’. I’m not being funny, but it’s all there to see.

“I’m not asking for a new gearbox, new mirrors, new wheels, nothing, but the problem is, the car does have to be resprayed so it’s matching. The window needs sorting. The inside of the car is pretty waterlogged now because it was left for a whole 24 hours. Because my garage is the only place which has the custom paint, they were not happy with the cost…”‘

This is easily fixed. Claim through her own insurance and let the insurer battle to cover their costs.

My suspicion is that her insurer won’t cover the custom paint job at the price her garage is wanting either – nor the water damage to the interior if that’s happened while they’re arguing about it, rather than a temporary fix being put in place.

I like the bland snark from Network Rail: “bridge strikes could be avoided with due diligence.”

    A flurry of incidents

A flurry of incidents reported in the Shropshire Star in the last 24 hours or so.

    – a one-vehicle crash occurred on the A49 near Stokesay soon after 4pm yesterday afternoon.

    – A car ended up on its side outside a primary school in Oakengates, Telford yesterday morning.

    – Last night a drunk driver crashed on the A41 Prees Heath roundabout near Whitchurch.

    – In the early hours of this morning a car hit signal poles at Emstrey roundabout near Shrewsbury on the A5 dual carriageway. Highways Agency had to close lanes, which predictably caused long queues and delays of up to 37 minutes this morning. The poles are there because temporary lights are still in place after another f*cking idiot wrecked the signalling system in October.

    – A man died after his car crashed into a tree at 7.40 this morning.

    – A car rolled onto its roof near Bridgnorth at 8.40 this morning, another single vehicle incident, no mention of a driver.

Also, yet another car gets stuck in Walcott Ford in Worcestershire. (twitter)

    Tempting, isn’t it?  The “but

Tempting, isn’t it?  The “but you moved to a lovely (but isolated) rural location”, or the “but maybe there were jobs which weren’t 50 miles away”, or “you could move closer to school / work”…

There is definitely a “tragedy of the commons” being played out e.g. “if only we didn’t all drive our children to school we wouldn’t all feel we have to drive our children to school”.  But also happening over time e.g. “I’ve lived here all my life – there were shops and even a library when I was growing up.  Then the school closed, the local hospital was merged with the one in the city…”

The flooding thing for me is another long term example of this.  Where our collective actions will (by their summed tiny contributions) make life hugely more problematic – but not equally.

    Very clear and comprehensive

Very clear and comprehensive thanks. The news today is that it’s been re-opened – but as I look out the window this morning, I wonder for how long.

As regards non-compliance with the road closure, there’s a “don’t drive / live in an area that floods, then” brewing inside me.

Not that far from me (next

Not that far from me (next county over in Dorset)

A significant proportion of Somerset is below sea level and pan-flat (Somerset Levels). The flooding is managed by a series of moors and reservoirs linked by rivers, some man-made spillways with sluices and water is pumped between them. The A361 closes when the spillway near it is taking water away in case it floods.

Much better explanation here if anyone is still reading.

    there really is no stopping

there really is no stopping some drivers. Anyone know the spot? Not sure I quite understand what these flood gates and spillways are all about.

    they didnt say whether they

they didnt say whether they prosecuted them for attempting that though, as Id have thought was a crime in itself, not least using a mobile phone in that manner whilst in a car that I doubt theyd bothered to turn the engine off of.

well I have to admit it does look pretty daft so far, though not finished yet, so maybe it will make more sense later on.
