A new catch-all Tea Shop thread for those miscellaneous new stories that don’t quite fit with parking, crashing into buildings or trapped/prisoners in their homes.

Parisians vote in favour of tripling parking costs for SUVs

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/feb/04/parisians-vote-in-favour-of-tripling-parking-costs-for-suvs

The new parking tariffs could come into force at the start of September. The cost of on-street parking for an SUV or 4×4 car would rise to €18 (£15) an hour in the centre of Paris and €12 an hour in the rest of the city.

The prices will apply to vehicles weighing more than 1.6 tonnes with a combustion engine or hybrid vehicles, and more than 2 tonnes for electric vehicles. The move will not apply to Paris residents’ parking.

Staffordshire motorsport show ‘evacuated due to high levels of carbon monoxide’

One disgruntled attendee wrote on Motorsport With Attitude’s Facebook page: “Three-and-a-half hours drive to stay the weekend for events. I don’t understand why you ran the arena shows inside with so little ventilation, the extractors were not enough and need big powerful fans to push the fumes out.

Another said: “We left after 1.5 hrs. Went to the show at 11.30 and car monoxide fumes were unbearable!!”

“There are families who have lived there years. Children have got older and have their own cars and park in the street.

    https://www.whatcar.com/news/the-most-stolen-cars-in-the-uk/n21162

Just the first article that came up on Google.  Of the three Range Rover variants listed (they’re all the same to me) it comes to around 4,000 reported stolen.

The article doesn’t separately list variants of the other cars and importantly there’s only vague references to how numerous each one is.

10 Most Stolen Cars In The UK 2023

This one is better showing that Land Rovers are stolen at twice the rate Fiestas are.  How sad, never mind.

Why So Many Land Rover Range Rovers?

The Land Rover Range Rover witnessed a significant (47%) surge in theft reports to the police from 2021 to 2022, a trend that extended into the initial months of 2023.

Such an uptick in theft incidents has posed challenges for Range Rover owners, especially in the London region, when it comes to insuring their cars. Skyrocketing insurance premiums and a dwindling number of firms willing to offer coverage are among the primary concerns. The dilemma with Range Rovers isn’t so much about their security measures but the huge demand both domestically and internationally. Thieves are aware of the lucrative market for these vehicles, making them invest in the required technology to steal them.

Calls for talks to stop £100

Calls for talks to stop £100 car park fines for ‘crossing road to use toilet’

Many drivers have fallen foul of the new strict parking regulations which were introduced at the St Ann Way retail park last year

Councillor Pam Tracey (C, Westgate) says her inbox is being filled with emails from people who have been given a parking charge notice. She says the problems with the charge notices there and other parking woes are the talk of Gloucester.

“It’s diabolical,” she said. “It’s one email after another. There’s loads of people being hit.

“They are fining people who park there in the evenings now too. As far as I’m concerned the Peel Centre never did their homework before they introduced these rules.”

I rather think they did, Cllr Tracey and it doesn’t sound like they want it be told their business by you. If it’s the talk of Gloucester, then presumably it’s only out of towners now being hit? How many of them are writing to you?

    “There’s loads of people
“There’s loads of people being hit.”

But only with fines, not by large fast vehicles with a literal ton or so of momentum. And only for things they chose to do – though they probably don’t realise it was a choice…

On which – as a nation we need to talk about linking push and pull – or “discouraging (a) but offering alternatives b, c and d”. If you’ve the UK’s problem of several generations of planned motornormativity (“planned” by eg. blocking, defunding or removing other modes) just sticking penalties or taxes on something may not be enough to change behaviour. It may just create enough resentment to get it undone. Equally we’re rubbish at “pull” eg. actually offering useful alternatives.

    Family’s fight for safer

Family’s fight for safer crossing on Maidstone Road, Matfield, after son hit by car outside The Poet

    https://www.kentonline.co.uk/maidstone/news/it-s-the-call-every-parent-fears-family-s-fight-after-son-301177/

One more crossing will fix it.

The driver is not thought to have been speeding and told police she did not see Oliver in time. It was dark and raining when the accident happened. (No mention of any police action.) His mum Ruth Hoy said: “I got the call every parent dreads.”
