Didn’t some early electric cars have issues with people noticing they were there at low speed – and various sounds were tried until someone realised that the sound that best alerted people to “car coming” was … the sound of a non-petrol car?

BMW driver rammed cars on M3 to improve their driving

A driver who caused “pandemonium” on the M3, driving at up to 130mph and ramming cars out of the way, told police he was targeting people whose driving did not meet his expectations. 

“I want to open up everyone’s eyes to keeping the outside lane clear. That is how I drive in a computer game.

The high-speed rampage only stopped when he collided with another vehicle near junction two for Winchester, causing it to spin around in the road. 

But Bathurst-Shaw-Binning then got in another driver’s car and told her to drive on, adding: “We need to go and see Charlie.”

He then got out of the vehicle and was arrested whilst hiding in the undergrowth at the side of the motorway.

When interviewed he told police he had gone out to get cigarettes. 

He was also disqualified from driving for 10 years with a further 40 months added on to take into account the time he will serve in custody. 

Mitigating, Islam Khan said his client has “sincere remorse” and “now upon reflection sees the consequences of his actions”.

Quite apart from the more serious design issue highlighted by this incident,

‘The car manufacturing giants had originally planned to make the I-Pace sound like a “sci-fi spacecraft”, but in testing they found that the sound caused pedestrians to look up at the sky, instead of in the direction of the vehicle.’

When will designers learn that in order to warn people of something approaching, they need to make it sound like the thing?  I’ve had the same problem with bicycle bells, and I still haven’t managed to find a loud enough, compact enough one that actually sounds like a bicycle bell.

Article was unclear whether he was sitting in his car all that time or whether he came out of the house, got in it and then started driving.

It does feel like there are

It does feel like there are issues around how the poor child was being supervised.  If she wandered out of the garden and sat down by the car for 10 minutes with no-one noticing, she could equally have wandered off quite a way in 10 minutes.

The tot had been playing in the garden, before walking down a path by the side of the family house.

She made her way out of an unlocked gate to the front driveway at around 10am, heard an inquest at Bradford’s H M Coroner’s Court yesterday.

Haniyah sat down in the rear blind spot behind her dad’s BMW Three Series and was tragically killed around 10 minutes later.

West Yorkshire Police’s Collisions Investigation Unit determined previously that Hanniyah’s small size meant it was unlikely the car sensors would have detected her.

Senior Coroner … said: “The great tragedy here is that there was nothing to alert the father to her presence.”

I don’t wish to seem unsympathetic, but “she sat down behind the [car] and was tragically killed around 10 minutes later.”  

So, the driver was so convinced of the efficacy of his parking sensors that he didn’t check around his car at all for ten minutes before driving away?

And, the child’s “small size meant it was unlikely the car sensors would have detected her” and “there was nothing to alert the father to her presence”?  But these cars are still OK to drive around in public?  You know, where there are children sometimes?

It’s a terrible incident, and I feel awful for the family, but I also feel angry that nobody seems to have been criticised for anything – not the father for not checking, not whoever thought the child was still in the back garden, not the car manufacturer whose sensors don’t pick up small humans.

Combined, the fuel duty freeze, which has been in place since it was introduced as a temporary measure in 2011, and the 5p cut to fuel duty, have cost the Treasury £100bn since 2011, according to the SMF (Social Market Foundation) analysis.

The two tax cuts to fuel are expected to knock £27bn off Treasury coffers over five years. The Conservatives attacked Labour’s ditched £28bn green investment promise over the same period as ruinously expensive.

Critics have said the fuel duty cut “helps the rich” while doing “little for the economy” as public transport worsens in quality.

In total, the SMF found the bottom fifth of earners would receive just 10% of the savings, compared with the top fifth who would pocket 24%.
