If you’re looking for fit-and-forget rubber that prioritises durability and comfort over low weight, the 35mm Hutchinson Challenger TR Tyre is a serious contender – just check your frame has the necessary clearance first.

It’s ideal for winter training and ultra-endurance cycling, with a claimed 10,000km lifespan and the excellent puncture resistance the Challenger range is known for – or for simply making poor road surfaces disappear.

Hunt has delivered a reliable, lightweight and responsive wheelset with the 25 Carbon Gravel X-Wide, offering impressive comfort, and the British brand even claims that these are the strongest gravel rims on the market.

The hookless rims feature a 27mm internal width and a 25mm depth. While they don’t share some of the aerodynamic features of Hunt’s Proven range, the £950 price tag feels very reasonable for what’s on offer -and at the time of writing, they’re available with 15% off.

Prestacycle’s One Liquid promises conditioning, polishing, degreasing, cleaning, washing and rust removal, and it even works as both a dry and wet chain lubricant.

Despite the name, its consistency is closer to a gel. It’s more versatile than most lubricants and takes a little practice to apply properly, but it delivers strong year-round protection, with the added bonus of being useful for other bike-maintenance tasks too. The 4oz (118ml) bottle costs £23 and lasts well thanks to its thick texture and staying power.

For riding in a range of conditions, the Van Rysel RoadR 900 Perf glasses are very well priced and perform excellently. The photochromic NXT lens automatically darkens in bright sunlight and clears in darker conditions, changing at a rate that feels natural and responsive, as reviewer Dave noted.

They have a nicely made frame that’s light, secure on your head and pretty easy to stow in most helmets. They offer good coverage, and they don’t fog easily, though the bridge isn’t adjustable.

One of our most-read reviews of the year clearly had a knock-on effect, because Halfords is all out of stock of Boardman’s excellent SLR 9.4 Carbon Ltd at the time of writing.

Stu described this all-rounder as “a lot of bike for the money”, and it’s certainly that: for £3,100 you’re getting a mix of SRAM Rival and Force components with electronic shifting, a carbon wheelset, plus a carbon frame and fork. Boardman hasn’t scrimped on finishing kit either, supplying quality 30mm Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres, a fully integrated FSA Vision Metron cockpit, and a highly-rated Prologo Scratch saddle that should agree with plenty of bums.

It’s just a shame that more riders won’t be able to get this bike in time for Christmas.

The Kinesis Fend Off Wide 700 x 50 Mudguards are a premium choice, but their durability, quiet performance and excellent coverage make them an excellent winter upgrade. Reviewer Josh noted that they “function flawlessly.”

The guards arrive fully disassembled, and while they do require a little bit of skill and knowledge to set them up, the process is straightforward enough. In terms of tyre clearance, the 700×50 Wide model sits cleanly over 35mm tyres and Kinesis states a maximum tyre width of 45mm.
