The Continental Archetype Limited Edition tyre is – put simply – one of the best race tyres I’ve ever used. It was designed specifically for the 2025 Tour de France in collaboration with the UAE Team Emirates XRG team – featuring a certain Tadej Pogačar – and Continental says it’s the fastest and lightest 30mm tyre it’s ever made. Though it is very pricey and is optimised for specific Enve rims.

Anecdotally, I’d say Continental is a tyre brand that people trust above a lot of others. In my experience, when someone has tried a set of Conti tyres with their grippy Black Chilli compound, they seldom go back. Although the Archetypes have a premium price by any standard, Continental claims they are the fastest and lightest 30mm tyres it has ever produced – and this is reflected in the near-£100 price tag.

FDJ-Suez, INEOS Grenadiers, Team Bahrain Victorious and Movistar are just some of the WorldTour teams that wrap their wheels in Continental rubber. But, at the top of Continental’s pile of sponsored talent is the highest ranked Men’s WorldTeam of all: UAE Team Emirates XRG. And the Archetypes were designed for the 2025 Tour de France, and if they’re good enough for Pogi…

‘We were asked by UAE Team Emirates XRG to build a tyre that could deliver even faster performance in a 30mm width,’ said Hannah Ferle, Road Product Manager at Continental.
‘The result is the Archetype: a tyre that distills our decades of racing expertise into a pure, purpose-built product. It’s minimal, fast, and made for those who live to compete.’

Out of the box, the first thing I noticed about the Archetype – and most Conti tyres – is the lack of moulding flash that you sometimes find with box-fresh rubber. The tread on these is laser cut, so they don’t need that same talc-like flash to prise them from their moulds. And I know this is subjective, but the rubber compound literally feels grippy when you run your thumb over it.

While the Archetype is optimised to work with the Enve rims used by Pogačar and his teammates, the tubeless-ready tyre is also designed to work with both hooked and hookless rims from other wheel brands.
I set these up tubeless on a set of Roval wheels and it was a breeze. I did have to use a tyre lever to get the last few centimetres of the tyre bead into the well of the rim, but I was able to inflate the tyres using a regular track pump at the first time of asking, which is always a bonus.

It’s only available in a 30mm width, and I opted for 55 psi to begin with – which I ended up being pretty happy with for both road riding and racing. I think that 30mm is pretty much the sweet spot for comfort and speed, and I couldn’t have been happier with the ride feel offered by the Archetype tyres throughout testing.
And if you do prefer to go wider or narrower, Continental does offer its regular GP5000 – in the faster, lighter S version and the All-Season AS model that majors on toughness and grip – in both wider and narrower widths.

In terms of grip, the Archetype tyres have it in abundance. Straightaway, I felt very confident tackling corners, completely trusting the tyres and finding them urging me to push that little harder and tip the bike over a little bit more.
I used the tyres for a few crit races on technical circuits with some full-on hairpin corners, and I couldn’t have asked for more from them.
Value
Okay – now we come on to the price. There are no two ways about it: £95 is a lot of money to spend on a tyre. But it’s not out of step with other top-end road tyres from the likes of Panaracer, Vittoria and Pirelli. It’s also a specialist tyre made in extremely limited quantities, so while expensive, I think you could just about justify the price if you’re looking for a premium race tyre for your best days on the bike.
The Panaracer Agilest Fast TLR is a tenner cheaper than the Archetype that I found fast and easy to set up, and it’s now available in three widths: 25, 28 and 30mm.
Stu found the Pirelli P Zero Race TLR tyres fast, grippy and supple, though he wasn’t so keen on the price, and they’re a chunk of change cheaper than the Contis at £74.99 each. It’s also available in different colours and a wide range of sizes.
Our best road tyres buyer’s guide covers more of our favourites from around just £20 or so.
Conclusion
I was hugely impressed with the Continental Archetype Limited Edition tyre. It’s light, fast and grippy in equal measure and is one I’d definitely consider investing in for racing. But it’s only available in one size and while you could justify it for the quality, £95 for a tyre is a big spend.

Continental says: “Born from countless hours and wins with UAE Team Emirates – XRG, the Archetype has racing in its DNA. Archetype is our lightest and fastest race-specific 30mm road tire, offering a substantial 35g weight saving over the Grand Prix 5000 S TR.”
The Archetype really is an all-out race tyre – no holds barred. And I found it a great choice for racing.

Limited Edition
In line with most Continental tyres, this is a premium tyre with a premium price.
Although I can’t verify these claims (road.cc still won’t stump up for a wind tunnel…), these feel like the fastest tyres I’ve ever ridden.
They are showing signs of wear after a month of testing, but this isn’t out of line with what you would expect from a top-end, race-focused tyre where speed, grip and weight are greater priorities than durability.
The 273g weight for a 30mm tubeless tyre is very competitive.
The 30mm width is, for me, the sweet spot for race tyres – I found these offered loads of comfort.
They’re expensive, no two ways doubt about it. But these are a super-limited edition with only 500 pairs of these available in the UK at the time of launch. So, while the price tag is high, the near-£100 price isn’t totally out of kilter for what you’d expect to pay for a top-end race tyre.

I liked the grip, speed, ease of set up, comfort and their reliable day-to-day running.
Tell us what you particularly disliked about the product
The high price, and the cracking effect of the ‘Archetype’ logo makes the tyres look worn.
How does the price compare to that of similar products in the market, including ones recently tested on road.cc?
The price is a little higher than other top-end race tyres, but Continental justifies this with their super-limited availability.
