At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

Clothing brands are becoming more aware of the demand for clothing that can be worn comfortably and stylishly off the bike as much as on it. New to the market is the DannyShane Service Course Jacket, designed to be the 'do it all' jacket that will keep you warm while looking good. It does both very well but what is also remarkable is the size it can pack down to for a jacket that has good insulation.

Wearing the jacket more off the bike, before events and afterwards I have been more than impressed by how warm it is. For a jacket that really can be packed away very easily it retains a surprising amount of heat.

DannyShane have been able to achieve this by using a new direct injection technique. The outer layer is made from 100% nylon which is used to create an external shell. This is then directly injected with the insulation provided by a mix of 90% down and 10% feather. This mix of insulation is input directly into small pouches in the outer layer which create the warmth but as importantly allow the jacket to be very light.

The tag line used by the company is, "prepare to make a statement" something they have achieved with simple elegance. The Service Course comes in grey with some black and white hoops on one sleeve and black trim. The sleeves are also contoured to create more of a riding position when you're on the hoods.

When you're not using the DannyShane Service Course Jacket it can be very easily rolled up and packed away in the small bag that's provided. This gives you the option to stash it in your jersey pocket to use if you get colder or when you stop for your cafe break.

The inside of the jacket is a plain black. The nylon outer allows you to wipe it down easily but you can pop it through the washing machine when you need to. On each side are zipped pockets which are reasonably deep. On the inside, again on each side are two more except these are just pouches so have no means to seal them. There is even an instruction diagram printed on the inside which shows you how to pack the Service Course Jacket into its bag.

The DannyShane Service Course Jacket is fastened by a full length zip. There is no protection behind the zip but then it hasn't felt necessary. There is no draft as the zip has kept the wind out. The collar is a decent size, a couple of inches and again the pouches within the shell are filled to provide that all important insulation.

The Service Course Jacket is great off the bike but when you are riding there is no traditional gripper on the sleeve cuffs. Given the 'slidy' nature of the nylon used on the outer shell it can ride up quickly and leave you a little exposed. A nice idea for on the bike but this jacket is much more at home looking cool off it, while keeping you warm.

Size tested: Medium

Tell us what the product is for, and who it's aimed at. What do the manufacturers say about it? How does that compare to your own feelings about it?

For anyone looking for a warm, stylish jacket that is a little bit different but works a treat off the bike. Not quite the success on the bike but packs down incredibly small so easy to transport.

DannyShane says:

Our new Service Course Down Jacket provides the ultimate in post and pre ride comfort and warmth, featuring a 100% Nylon outer shell , 90% down and 10% feather insulation.

It is produced with a new direct injection technique, allowing the injection of the down directly into the fabric baffles without inner bag – this drastically reduces weight yet provides incredible warmth.

The sleeves are slightly contoured to rider position whilst on the hoods.

The jacket is easily rolled and packed away in the included bag, perfect for pre-race registration, cafe stop or winter commute. (To be honest, we wear it everywhere!)

Off the bike the DannyShane Service Course Jacket is a sure fire winner, stylish, warm and very lightweight. It only suffers on the bike as the sleeves ride up as does the bottom of the jacket due to the lack of grip.

Rate the product for durability:

9/10

Despite having a nylon outer shell it has proven to be durable.

Rate the product for weight, if applicable:

The jacket is remarkably light and very easy to pack down into it's own bag making it very easy to take with you if you're not wearing it.

Rate the product for comfort, if applicable:

The nylon outer shell makes for a smooth, comfortable fit.

Rate the product for value:

7/10

Given the price and the fact it is billed as a jacket for use on and off the bike it will prove to be a little expensive for some.

Tell us how the product performed overall when used for its designed purpose

Off the bike you can't fault the DannyShane Service Course Jacket, it keeps you warm, is light and even easier to pack away. On the bike it is prone to slide up on the sleeves or the body which is a shame.

Warm and lightweight.

Tell us what you particularly disliked about the product

Just a shame it doesn't work so well on the bike.

Did you enjoy using the product? On the whole.

Would you consider buying the product? Maybe but not for use on the bike.

Anything further to say about the product in conclusion?

A great looking and working jacket but more for pre and post ride use.

It will only be good for those who is not riding very fast or trying very hard. Normally these are for cooling off or maybe the very beginning of a cold ride. However, no matter how packdown it is it will still be too big to carry.

I wouldn't buy one.

Not all manufacturers use live-plucked down.

I never knew this - I will avoid down products from now on. Seems like there are plenty of synthetic alternatives anyway.

Plenty of ethically sourced down products too.
