A video which went viral on social media has caught the attention of police in Northern Ireland who say they are investigating the footage of an adult cyclist carrying a child on their back “in an unsafe manner” in Belfast.

The footage was widely shared on Facebook and other social media platforms, and shows the moment the cyclist was spotted riding along a painted cycle lane on Springfield Road with a young child on his back. When they approach a roundabout the man rides into the right-hand lane before going around the roundabout the wrong way, narrowly avoiding a collision with a motorist approaching from one of the connecting roads.

“That is unbelievable,” one person can be heard saying. “Jesus, round the wrong side of the roundabout,” a second person adds moments later.

PSNI says it is aware of the incident in west Belfast and an investigation is underway.

“We are aware of a video circulating social media of an adult and a child cycling in an unsafe manner in the Springfield Road area of the city,” a PSNI spokesperson said. “If anyone has any information, or any further dashcam footage please contact us on 101 quoting serial number CC2025052901396.”

The original source of the footage isn’t clear, the video having received plenty of attention across several social media posts. One on Reddit titled “Lunatic adult cyclist” has been shared thousands of times, while NI Driving School also shared the clip on its page.

“If anyone knows who this guy is, please tell him to give us a call ASAP — we’ll teach him how to drive so he can take his kids to school safely… and preferably inside the vehicle, not clinging on like it’s the Tour de Danger,” the post which has been viewed more than 1.5 million times said.

One commenter suggested the man “should be arrested for child endangerment”, another saying: “What an absolute idiot some people just don’t have any brains whatsoever.”

Another person joked: “And there was me worrying about whether that extra portion of ice cream in my children’s desserts last night was too much.”

On Reddit, one user said they were “thinking it was just a basic anti-cycling rant until I saw the legs”.

“Just got worse and worse. Who the f**k cycles the wrong way around a roundabout with a kid dangling of your back?” another asked.
