An elderly pedestrian died in hospital last week following a collision involving a cyclist riding the Tour de Manc sportive last weekend.
Greater Manchester Police has made no arrests but have appealed for information as the investigation into the fatal collision during the Manchester event continues.
The force explained that the collision happened in Tameside at around 12pm on Sunday 4 May, a participant in the Tour de Manc sportive hitting an 80-year-old female pedestrian on Mottram Road in Stalybridge. Officers say it is believed that the cyclist was overtaking another rider when the collision occurred, close the junction of Fern Bank.
The cyclist, who sustained minor injuries, remained at the scene and Greater Manchester Police has not made any arrests. An 80-year-old woman was seriously injured and died in hospital on 7 May last week, three days after the collision.
Greater Manchester Police this weekend released an appeal for information: “As officers continue their investigation, they are asking for anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information to please come forward. The cyclist was taking part in an event and officers are particularly keen on other cyclists who may have witnessed the incident or have footage to come forward.
“This also includes anyone with dashcam, CCTV, mobile, or doorbell footage from the wider area. Officers can be contacted via 101, 0161 856 4741, or our Live Chat service at gmp.police.uk, quoting log number 1238 of 04/05/25. Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”
A spokesperson for the event said they are “truly devastated” by the incident and said their “heartfelt thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased”.
“We will be co-operating fully with all relevant authorities,” they added, stressing that all riders were given a safety briefing ahead of the event.
According to a witness who was quoted by Mail Online, the pedestrian “stepped out, and the cyclist hit her”.
The Tour de Manc is a non-profit charity cycling event which raises money for a host of charities. It was first run in 2014 and the 2025 edition saw participants given a choice of routes ranging from 60km to 200km.

I presume that it’s not a closed road event?
So, it appears, what happened was just as would happen if a pedestrian had stepped out onto a road at any other time (ie. when there wasn’t a sportive happening) and been hit by a car.
It would be an equally sad event, but I suspect that the Mail would have reported my hypothetical very differently…
I don’t know the Sportive in
I don’t know the Sportive in question but the closed road sportives have been closed to vehicles not pedestrians. You might have some barriers/ marshalls at the start and maybe key points but you cant barrier everywhere and keep an event profitable (not to mention civil liberties of shutting a whole area down to all modes).
Imagine if the same incident
Imagine if the same incident and outcome occurred at the London Marathon, how would that be reported by the Mail?
it’s very sad that the
it’s very sad that the pedestrian has died.
but, in the current context, it raises an important question:
In future, if there is a pedestrian-cyclist collision due to a cyclist’s recklessness, and the pedestrian dies, then the cyclist will be charged with causing death by dangerous cycling.
if there is a pedestrian-cyclist collisions due to a pedestrian’s recklessness, and the cyclist dies, what does the pedestrian get charged with?
the incident in question could have very, very easily been worse for the cyclist than the pedestrian.
It should be manslaughter
It should be manslaughter assuming any charges were brought

Should but won’t.

Genuine question – has a pedestrian ever been prosecuted for causing an injury or death to a cyclist in the UK? I know there have been incidents where they haven’t – despite subsequent coroner’s inquests clearly pinning the blame on the pedestrian. Yes – here’s a recent one
Yes – here’s a recent one whose conviction captured the attention (but was subsequently overturned – which kinda reinforces your point) – https://road.cc/content/news/auriol-grey-manslaughter-conviction-overturned-308257
I made the mistake of reading
I made the mistake of reading the comments underneath this story on the Sun’s feed on Facebook, which was quite the eye-opener even by the standards one would expect from such a source. Pretty much every knuckle-dragging-mouth-breather commenting believed that the new proposed laws meant that this would automatically get life imprisonment, most of them seeming to believe that this ought to happen without a trial…there were one or two dissenting voices, they were the ones who wanted “a life for a life” and thought cyclists should face the death penalty if they kill anyone.
Thanks for convincing me to
Thanks for convincing me to shut down the Mail page before I got there!
Has the Mail, an on-line
Has the Mail, an on-line propaganda company, made any fuss about the hundred plus pedestrians killed by drivers every year? Any? Any at all?
The Mail should be banned as an organisation promoting hate.
