Three people have been arrested for killing a cyclist in a hit and run while drink driving in a stolen car.
A 27-year old woman from Kingsfold died at the scene when she and her bicycle were hit by the car on Friday evening at around 8pm.
According to the police and local media reports the cyclist was hit by a silver Citroën Xsara when it crossed double white lines and entered the opposite carriageway on the A29 near Pulborough in Sussex when overtaking a grey Audi Q7. The driver of the Xsara then fled the scene.
A 26 year old man from Billingshurst, believed to be the driver, was later arrested in Storrington, five miles away, on a charges of causing death by dangerous driving, drinking and driving and driving while disqualified.
A 22-year-old woman from Crawley and a 17-year-old boy from Horsham were arrested at the scene for also for causing death by dangerous driving, drinking and driving and theft of a vehicle.
They all remain in custody.
Sergeant Stewart Goodwin from the road policing team said: "We are appealing for anyone who saw a silver car travelling in the Stane Street area around 8pm.
"We need to speak to any witnesses who saw what happened or saw the car prior to the collision. Please speak to us on 101 or email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting Operation Barnward."

Let’s hope he gets at least
Let’s hope he gets at least 40 hours community service…

Such a tragic loss. My condolences to the victims family x

She won’t have been wearing a helmet which obviously makes this all her fault, so the driver will get a stern talking to – or at least that seems to be the standard these days …
If they get more than 2 years
If they get more than 2 years in jail I’ll be amazed. Absolutely tragic
Death by dangerous driving
Death by dangerous driving carries a max sentence of 14 years. Unlawful act manslaughter max = life. It seems quite clear to me what the CPS should be preparing to press for in court.
I wish they could prosecute
I wish they could prosecute for vehicular murder in this country. Unfortunately these scum will only get a slap on the wrist for the killing and the entire incarceration will be due to the vehicle theft. Because, you know, property is important…
death by dangerous driving,
death by dangerous driving, drinking and driving and driving while disqualified…..where are the rest of the charges??
Surely there should be
Death by dangerous driving
Drink driving
Driving while disqualified
Driving without insurance
Fleeing the seen of a crime
Theft of a motor vehicle
I’m sure there could be more that I’m missing.
As for the snide comments above, please keep that crap to yourself, someone has died.
Thoughts go out to this poor woman’s family

Problem is that killing cyclists seems almost acceptable by the legal system!!!!
How many more innocent people are going to die before something is done!
The BiL was hit by a previously convicted Drink driver who was drink driving, and who has been convicted of drink driving again since! I think he has 3 maybe 4 convictions and still has a licence, what does that say about priorities!
And yes my condolences do go to the family of the victim, there is nothing that can be done to undo what is done, but there are things that can be done to stop it ever happening again!

This tragic case is appalling. We must all get together on this one, to demand the maximum custodial sentence and a lifetime driving ban.
This happened just down the
This happened just down the road from me. It could have easily been me. There are to many deaths on the road for all road users, cars and bikes alike. We, as a country, need to pressurize our government to resolve the issues. The tech is out there to help, we now need political will and a government to agree even one life lost due to inaction is to many.
I really feel for the family of this young lady cut down in her prime.

Likewise, I live in Horsham having just moved from Surrey.
The area, with lots of dual carriageways seems to attract idiots driving like tw*ts. Its almost a weekly occurance someone is killed or seriously injured on the roads nearby.
I have to say I never really experienced animosity when I rode around Surrey, but since moving to Sussex I notice it a lot more.
Very sad news, and easily avoidable.

Oh my good god. This is dreadful, and in dreadful circumstances. My heart goes out to her family.
There’ll be plenty of time to get stroppy later. And I will be getting stroppy.

While I do believe there is a hell of a lot that could be done to improve cyclists’ safety, and that the sentences that are presently handed out to motorists who kill through lack of due care are pathetic, I don’t think much could be done in this awful case. It was a scumbag breaking the law because he’s a scumbag. Short of locking up all the scumbags…
Appalling that it happened and my thoughts go out to the victim’s family.
Another scene of absolute
Another scene of absolute carnage and destruction, with the perpetrator probably getting a few years in the clink with a ridiculously small fine. All very unjust …
Hopefully the Crap
Hopefully the Crap Prosecution Service will grow a pair and actually do something about this case, if there is not a Custodial sentence for such a list of blatant crimes then there is no hope left for Justice in this Country.
There is no place in society for people so arrogant that they can see no wrong in drink driving, driving dangerously and stealing, if this was caused by anything other than a car it would be Manslaughter would it not?
Sympathy goes out to the woman’s family I hope they see Justice done!
I suspect being a stolen car
I suspect being a stolen car will eliminate the “it’s an accident that could happen to anyone” sentiment, and this driver won’t be let off with a slap on the wrist.
Doesn’t make it any more or less upsetting to the family of the victim though.
Prison isn’t neccessarily a
Prison isn’t neccessarily a deterent: the driver of this car, with his possibly chaotic life, might even enjoy three hot meals a day, Sky Sports TV, and the company of similarly disposed individuals. And, as we know, he won’t be inside for very long in the grand scheme of things.
But what these people fear is publicity. There needs to be some sort of on-line “hall of shame”, complete with mug shots and a list of offences, which can be easily displayed at places as diverse as motorway service stations, town centres and football grounds, and everyone with a driving licence should be required to waive their right to privacy if they kill.
Then, at least for those convicted of causing death by dangerous driving, I’d like to see some sort of regular community service obligation until they are too old to continue; partly to act as a visible deterent to others and partly to help pay for the enormous cost of each of these deaths.
In addition, there has to be an automatic driving ban for life. We’ve really got to push for this measure to be mandatory, rather than all this “jailed for life” clamour which doesn’t really help our cause.
Finally, I’d permanently increase their basic rate of tax by 5 percent, for life, so that the financial penalty is directly proportional to income, rather than a minor (and easily forgotten) fine, and spend that money on the resources needed to catch more of these dangerous individuals.
Harsh? Yes. Neccessary? Absolutely.

Thats actually something that might work, rather than just being a knee-jerk reaction looking for retribution – which is entirely understandable but doesn’t always help in the long term.

It should perhaps be pointed out that he only jails with Sky in cells are those “outsourced” to the likes of G4S, who do so because it’s cheaper to leave prisoners locked in their cells watching TV than it is to have enough staff to run decent rehabilitation.
String ’em all up.
String ’em all up.
think the rules of journalism
think the rules of journalism should be rememebered here – proceedings are still active – there’s no conviction yet your headline suggests otherwise.
Two points:
i The Contempt of Court Act – at least as far I understood it.
ii The three arrested persons’ briefs could have reason to point out that you have prejudiced any forthcoming trial.
Your heading “in quotes” doesn’t offer protection and in any case – as far as I can ascertain – doesn’t appear to be a direct quote from your story.
you are sailing close with this one.
just sayin’…….
It’s all very well suggesting
It’s all very well suggesting that drivers are banned for life but when we are talking about people who are drunk and stealing cars it won’t make a blind bit of difference. This sort of person is not concerned about breaking the law or any ban that is imposed upon them. I hate to say it but locking them up really does seem to be the only way to keep people safe.

I was nearly the victim of a similar accident a while back, with a Honda Civic overtaking into my side of the road. Shook me up sufficiently that I actually stopped to calm down… terrible driving. Throw the book at them.
