It feels like you can’t open a cycling website these days without another brand releasing quality hoops to upgrade your ride. Today, it’s Boyd Cycling’s turn, with the launch of not one but two wheelsets aimed at the gravel crowd. Interestingly, the two wheelsets, the Jocassee and Reiver, sit at opposite ends of the gravel spectrum. Here are the details.

Reiver means rowdy

Hitting the scales at 1,385g and priced at £1,050 for the complete wheelset would normally be enough to grab most riders’ attention, but the Reiver has more to offer than low weight and a competitive price, namely durability and strength. Boyd makes it very clear that there are faster wheels on offer (more on that below), but the Reiver isn’t for riders grinding away at maximum pace. Instead, this is the wheelset for riders who like to treat their gravel bike more like an MTB.

Built for tougher, more aggressive riding conditions, the Reiver features a reinforced carbon layup with claimed ‘mountain bike’ strength, despite a low rim weight of just 380g and the 26mm internal rim width has been designed to optimise modern gravel tyres measuring between 40–50mm. Boyd claims that the shallow 25mm depth provides vertical compliance to ‘dampen high-velocity “chatter”.’

The lightweight carbon rims are laced to Boyd’s own Grade 36 hubs, which use a 10-degree engagement ratchet design, via Pillar TB2016 J-bend spokes.

The Jocassee is all about weight savings

At the opposite end of the gravel spectrum is the Boyd Cycling Jocassee wheelset, an all-new gravel wheelset utilising Toray T1000 aerospace-grade carbon fibre in high-stress zones, for a complete wheelset weight of just 1,145g. Despite the low weight, the Jocassee still achieves an impressive 120J impact resistance rating.

This ultra-lightweight wheelset features a deeper, more aerodynamic 36mm rim profile, with a 26mm internal rim width and a rim weight of just 320g. An offset rim bed ensures perfectly balanced spoke tension. Like the Reiver, the Jocassee wheels are hand-built in Greenville, SC, but they boast a higher engagement 6.6-degree Grade 54 ratchet hubset for faster power transfer.

If you sit on the rowdy end of the gravel spectrum, Boyd’s Reiver wheelset will set you back £1,050, but if it’s lightweight you’re after, the Jocassee costs £1,800.
