There are different approaches to winter foot protection among road cyclists – some have switched to more substantial gaiter-like options for their superior weather protection and durability, while others have dispensed with overshoes entirely in favour of winter cycling shoes, which have in-built weather protection. But if you’re happy to wear conventional designs like these Boardman Cycle Overshoes on top of your normal cycling shoes, they’re a great shout: they’re warm, well made and a bargain price.
Despite my EU46 and wide feet being at the top of the size range for the large test pair, the Boardman overshoes went on and off pretty easily without having to pull too hard on the heel loop. This is a good sign, because overly tight overshoes made from thinner material are prone to tear in short time. But these are a comfortably snug fit, and no loose material bunches up. Sizes S, M, and XL are also available, covering feet from UK3.5 to 13.5, and EU36 to 49.

A reflective trim runs both sides of the full-length rear zip, which a Velcro strap, carrying a reflective Boardman logo, closes at the top. The reflective branding on the front is less visible, and the overshoes only come in black. If you want your overshoes to boost your visibility there are much better choices.

Boardman says the neoprene sole has a reinforced toe and heel, common areas for overshoes to rip. After several hundreds kilometres, there are no signs of wear here, which bodes well for their longevity. The zip, another common failure point, is still moving smoothly.

The coldest temperature I’ve worn the overshoes in was 6°C and they kept my feet abundantly warm. While doing efforts on slightly milder days, they were, if anything, too well insulated. But I do run hot and if your extremities tend to get cold, you may find this pleasant.

Bearing in mind that the overshoes aren’t meant to be fully waterproof, they repel water well. Light rain and road spray ran straight off. Because it didn’t rain heavily during the testing period, I also tried them under the garden hose. My feet remained dry after several minutes’ steady flow, during which I targeted the zip area too.

I should add that running full-length mudguards in the wet significantly reduces the volume of water hitting your feet, making having fully waterproof overshoes less critical.
Value
Cycling overshoes don’t come much cheaper than the Boardmans. We’ve reviewed very few that cost less, even going back a few years.
Galibier’s Barriers are now £24.77, but are more about fending off cold than rain, and Madison’s Sportive PU Thermal Overshoes, which scored really well, are no longer available (though it does have other options, from £24.99).
Fully waterproof designs generally start from about twice as much, like the GripGrab RaceThermo Waterproof Winter Road Shoe Covers that Ben reviewed in 2022, which are now £40. And you can spend a lot more than that. Check out our guide to the best cycling overshoes for more options.
Conclusion
Working on the basis of traditional options lasting a season or two, it’s entirely possible that some more expensive overshoes will prove better value in the long run – if they’re more durable – but I’m rather taken aback by the performance of these Boardmans for the money. They’re seriously warm, don’t flap, and seem built to last. Only if I wanted 100 per cent waterproofing and better visibility would I feel the need to spend more.
Verdict
Insulation, great fit and rain protection at a bargain price, though they could be more visible

Although this time of year, a rear light is a better option. Once silhouetted by the sun, doesn’t make much difference what colour clothing you have.
