The Race Face Aeffect R stem proves to be excellent value for money showing quality CNC’d goodness doesn’t have to be pricey. Its smooth and sleek looks with subtle matt finish will suit a wide range of styles whilst a wide range of length options cover most MTB disciplines. All in a lightweight package, it’s a super stem which is hard to look past.
Race Face Aeffect R stem – Technical details
The Race Face Aeffect R stem is engineered for enduro applications however it comes in a range of lengths which make it also suitable for cross-country and trail along with e-bikes.

Made from 6061 aluminium, the stem is forged for strength and then CNC machined to it’s final shape with a focus on honing out material to save weight. The 40mm long stem tipped the scales at 149g and for reference, the OneUp Components stem comes in a little heavier at 160g.

The Aeffect R sports a 38mm stack height, 0 degree rise and a bar clamp width of 55mm, which is narrow enough to fit most bars on the market.

Available in 32, 40, 50 and 60mm lengths, the Aeffect R stem has a wide range of applications suited however it is only suited for 35mm diameter handlebars. A single matt anodised black colourway completes the offering.
Race Face Aeffect R stem – Performance
Fitting a stem is usually a simple affair and the Aeffect R is no different. The top-lock clamp system makes things even simpler requiring the tightening the top faceplate bolts first before torquing the bottom bolts to 5Nm. This saves the usual hassle of having to balance out the torques of 4 bolts on a traditional face plate.

There are no markings on the stem to help with angling or centralising the bars so you’ll need to rely on your chosen handlebar’s markings for this.
Stems have a fairly basic job to carry out, and whilst most stems manage to hold your bar to your fork steerer with no issues, there are still ways to stand out from the crowd. I really like the aesthetics of the Aeffect R stem, it’s a smoother and more sleek design compared to other more industrious looking options. The matt-black finish is subtle and classy which’ll fit any style although those looking for a coloured stem will need to go elsewhere.

There is no notable flex in the stem, which ensures a direct feel to steering and the faceplate manages a firm grip on the bar, whether it’s carbon or aluminium. Anyone with a 31.8mm handlebar will need to look elsewhere as the Aeffect R is only available in 35mm clamp – a little strange, I wonder how many people are running a more cross-country orientated 60mm long stem with a stiff 35mm diameter handlebar?
Race Face Aeffect R stem – Verdict
Retailing at £60 the Race Face Aeffect R stem is excellent value for money. There are, of course, plenty of options on the market but not many at this price point.
If you’re looking for a lightweight option, the Renthal Apex 35 stem is a great option coming in at 125g for the 40mm version. It looks great and is beautifully made however at £117 its expensive!
At a similarly priced £69, the PNW Components Range Stem Gen 3 is a smart option. Although the length options are limited it is available in 31.8 and 35mm bar diameters. It’s a little heavy but it’s well built and looks great.
The Race Face Aeffect R stem is a very well priced, high quality offering which comes in a wide range of lengths to suit most MTB applications. Fitting is super easy thanks to the top-lock system and it quietly goes about keeping your bars secure – what more do you need?
