Fantasy Cycling
Last month LNER announced that the gates to the cycle path would be shut until 2025, forcing local cyclists to use a lengthy diversion on an “unsafe” road – but the railway company has now relented following pressure from the council
"By backing this cycle lane, we are securing a new deal for cyclists in York, safety, efficiency, convenience, and quality of life"
The church previously had a planning application denied by the council who said the wall and railings, next to a popular shared-use path for local schools, have "historic" and "aesthetic" value and "no evidence of additional public benefit" was provided
"Multiple collisions" have been reported at the narrow corner of a cycle path which was due to be widened to improve visibility, a local cycle campaign group saying the U-turn "makes a mockery of the whole scheme as a measure to boost cycling"
Despite the council announcing mitigation for blue badge holders, tradespeople and emergency service workers, the news that parking spaces will be removed to make way for the cycling infrastructure has not gone down well
The owners say the introduction of double yellow lines on York’s West Esplanade would “increase the danger to pedestrians, rowers, and café customers”
30 locations around city where access is similarly impeded are also being reviewed
Thermal imaging technology will identify riders' heat signatures and adjust phasing as they approach
Barriers at either end are being ignored
University of York are seeking funding for outdoor velodrome to be built in Tour de France year.
