At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

Funkier's Hueza Gents Elite Bib Shorts are comfortable, have some great features and look the part as a set with the Hueza jersey (review here).

The major feature of these shorts is the bib section, which is attached by a clip at the front and rear. It's so the bib section can be clipped away in the event of a major call of nature, making that break a little easier to... do.

If I'm honest, on a gent's set of padded cycling shorts I'm not entirely convinced it's necessary. Truthfully, it actually makes putting the shorts on and taking them off in the first place a bigger faff than it needs to be, while the way the bib section sits stretched around your neck can feel slightly odd and strangely cumbersome during the ride.

Even if you remove the bib section to ride them without (which you can just about do for plain clothes commuting), half the clip remains at both front and rear, which is a nuisance at best. Those are the downsides.

However, it does strike me that the clip system is a very practical solution, especially for a female cyclist, for reasons that I'm sure are obvious. All you have to do is unclip the straps (beware of the comedic spring back in the face when the clip is released), and suddenly all practical business becomes a lot easier at coffee stops. Indeed, I was obliged to make use of the clip system, and its benefits were absolutely clear in that regard – for everyone.

To be honest, it's a love it or hate it feature, and if you think you'd benefit from it, then great.

Let's move on: I like these bib shorts. They're top lookers, feature the same gripper style as the jersey (comfortable and secure), and have a performance lightweight feel.

The actual bib fabric is decent quality, and the construction of the whole product is excellent – it'll last for wash after wash, and feel like new.

The other great feature is the pad, which in this case is an Italian F2 variety. It's not the bulkiest available, instead employing multiple higher density and thickness sections with added perforations for cooling. It works extremely well, and was untroubled by 100km rides; that was the furthest I rode in them, and I finished incredibly fresh and convinced I'd have been fine for another 100km – if my legs could have held up to the strain.

At £79.99, these are great bib shorts. If you like the clip system, or at least it doesn't faze you, then they're definitely worth a look. And they make a great matching set with the Hueza jersey

Verdict

Overall, very good bib shorts with an innovative clip-release bib system. Worth a look

Rate the product for quality of construction:

9/10

The clips are a sturdy build, sliding in and out of their housing easily yet clipping securely. Everywhere else is great, barring a tiny amount of fluffing on the underside of the leg where I rubbed up against my (admittedly well-loved) saddle.

Rate the product for performance:

9/10

Great performance during riding, functioning as I'd hope a pair of lightweight bib shorts would.

Rate the product for durability:

7/10

The Lycra fluffed up when rubbed against a slightly abrasive, old and worn saddle, but this is something I've seen before and isn't unusual.

Rate the product for fit:

9/10

Great fit, even with the oddness of bibs that circle your neck.

Rate the product for sizing:

7/10

The medium is true to size, but the bib section could be a little looser in my view without compromising function.

Rate the product for weight:

7/10

Good weight for a lightweight pair of bib shorts, with the clips just, just adding a touch extra.

Rate the product for comfort:

7/10

The traditionally built areas are great, but the bib strap setup could use a little loosening for extra comfort, and the rear clip I found just rested on my spine, which felt strange.

Rate the product for value:

7/10

How easy is the product to care for? How did it respond to being washed?

Absolutely fine.

I wouldn't go out of my way to get the clip system, but with a little finessing it could fully win me over.

An innovative clip system makes full removal for going on-the-go easier than ever, with only a few drawbacks. And it impresses elsewhere too.
