Pinarello unveil new Dogma 65.1 Think 2 frame

Wiggo, Cav et al's new tool for the tour gets even better Carbon.....

Those chaps at Trek aren't the only ones with a shiny new bike to get all misty-eyed about, you know. The start of the Tour is always a big time for new bike announcements and this year is no exception. Next to break cover is the new – deep breath – Pinarello Dogma 65.1 Think 2, which Team Sky will no doubt be ranting round the lanes of France over the next three weeks; it's on the UCI approved list, so it's good to go.

"It was to be no easy task to improve upon the frame that has taken the champions of both Sky and Movistar to numerous victories, seen Wiggins pedal to yellow and move the world champion sprinter Mark Cavendish to claim 'this frame is perfect' after his first ride aboard the Dogma 2," starts the press release the Pinarello sent over today. Okay, a tough act to follow, so what to do? Well the first thing was to hot foot it over to Carbon giants Toray to request, nay demand, that they improve upon their top-dollar 60-ton 60HM1K fibre, which is where the 60 comes from in the Dogma 60's name. The new bike is called the Dogma 65. Can you guess what they did?

Yup, the new frame is made from a new 65-ton Torayca 65HM1K Nanoalloy Carbon, and Pinarello claim that not only will the new frame be "more rigid, more reactive and even better prepared for the rigors of professional cycling" but also lighter because they can use less of the black stuff to make it. They didn't mention whether it'd be more vertically compliant too; we can only hope.

The other aspect of the frame that's been heavily worked on is the integration and routing for different types of groupset. Obviously a top-end frame such as this is going to see its fair share of Shimano Di2 and Campag EPS running gear, so Pinarello have made interchangeable cable stops for all types of electronic and mechanical groupsets which keeps everything looking very neat and tidy.

The actual shape of the frame is much the same as its predecessor. Pinarello are continuing to champion their asymetric frame designs - Think Asymetric is their tagline these days, after all - that they say are designed to work with the forces produced by the rider. Since the drivetrain is on one side of the bike there's a certain amount of your power going into attempting to twist the frame, and Pinarello's design philosophy is to counter that with more material where it's needed, and less where it's not. So your wonky pedalling forces are, erm, de-wonked, resulting in more linear power transfer. The Dogma was the first frame to get the asymetric treatment but since then Pinarello have been busy rolling it out across the range. The Dogma also gets wiggly ONDA forks and stays that Pinarello say improve the comfort of the bike.

If you want a new 65.1 frame then you'll have to wait for a bit. There's demo bikes available at the Eurobike show in September so if we get even half a chance we'll sling a leg over one; we don't have an on-sale date just yet. When the bike does become available you'll be able to have it in any one of 12 sizes (or 13, according to the UCI list) from 42cm to 62cm, and the paintjob and finishing kit are customisable via the MyWay tool on Pinarello's website so you can get it looking just so. Be warned: it will cost lots of money.

looks like the chinarello wasn't too far behind with the new dlogdma 65 model at $615 400 quid?

i think it all comes down to personal preference and if you have the penny's, if you can make an old bike go surely you can make a new bike of the same quality go better as the technology in bikes has come along so much. i think teams are happy to go with the sponsor that offers them the best deal and obviously if the riders like the bikes, but it is not simply who has the best bikes as there all much of a muchness and cav and wiggins will probably both do just as well on the specilized as they have been on the pinarello. i have to say though the pinarello TT bike looks the dogs bollocks, and the specilized one im not as keen on but some may prefer it the other way, performance is a big factor but there is also a massive mental factor of the fact if you like a bike you are more likely to do better as you feel better on it. i found this when i changed from a very good old bike to a good new bike. and im sure will find exactly the same when i upgrade to a very good carbon bike. guess its all personal preference what works for one may not work for another but with the amount of money these pro bike manufacturers have they should be able to cater to everyone's needs!!

I don't know about you but to me the "Chinarello" coined monicker reliably put me off PINArello. For ever.

I know it's the war of marketing, almost all bikes are made in Taiwan and China etc etc. But that was a huge blow from a silly play of words.

They all weight 6.8 kilos, they all fit each rider Individually and they are all as good as you'd expect them to be at the price they would cost to buy, surely.

exactly! pantani was a rider known for giving bike suppliers a headache making tiny tweaks to get the optimumn. once he knew his geometry he could take it anywhere. anyone who thinks a pro bike comes out of the same shop as your 11k venge or dogma and goes straight under cavs or contadors ass is not really aware of the bike trade and the race industry.

then lets get into the pro bikes made by a specialist and painted up as a brand. david millar talks about how terry dolan made loads of his frames as his teams sponsor couldnt supply what he needed.

unlike mountain bikes there are not many pateneted and obvious secret formulas like the horst link etc in road bikes.

has cavendish ever said in any publication he wants specialized at sky? and would a team take what one of their 25+ riders says as gospel? what if wiggo said no i want an apollo?

infact wiggins is qouted as answering a a question of 'what is the best bike in the peleton?' his answer ... 'whatever my team rides'

think the whole cav wants specialized is bullshit, all those pro bikes are custom made for at least the main stars.
any brand could replicate any bikes geometry and handling very easily. just that specialized have the cash to supply, and it doesnt take a genius to work out they will get out of saxo/barclays/rbs/tinto bank as soon as they can and want to sponsor the most talked about team.

there are 6'000'000 reasons sky are so willing to take on spesh bikes as im sure pinarello are not willing to pay that wonga.

saw a few pinarrelo dogmas on the dartmoor classic this weekend, i assume they were real but i cycled passed them so quickly i didnt have time to analyse if they were real or fake

There was an article here on road.cc about Sky's new Spesh deal, no?

Edit: wasn't even hard to find. It's there in the handily titled "related stories" column.

Thanks. Just what I wanted.

I was on the mobile site so had no related article. When I saw the article date I now know why I missed it! I was on a beach in Portugal and was phone/net free!

Thanks.

It makes sense as ever since spesh were announced as supplier for neutral service bikes for ToB I have been waiting for that to happen.

Thanks again.

+1 for russyparkin's radiator comment 24

It's only been a matter of months since the Dogma 2 was the new best thing and now it is old hat. I'm sure there are dentists, lawyers and Apprentice stars on TV who are happy to cough up for the badge but in the end it's still only a bleedin' bicycle!

TBH I don't want a bike that's more rigid. If I had £5k I'd rather spend it on some training holidays and a stronger pair of legs.

Ahemmm..... GB/sky will definitely be on Specialized next year. One or two of the GB team are already riding them. (And Prefering them) it's all to do with Cav's personal deal with Specialised apparently.

I'm amazed that three seasons ago my Colnago EP cost me £2300, which was the going rate for a top end frame, but in that time the price has rocketed to £3500-£4000. Are these prices being London bike fashion driven?

What I do know, is that my next frame will be custom 953 for half the price.

That is what I thought would happen but not seen anything written about hence my comment above. You seem sure though which backs up my initial thinking. Gut feeling? Or have you seen something I have missed?

"de-wonked". Brilliant.

If they'd put Cav on mt son's wooden balance bike he would've trotted out the sponsor-correct 'this frame is perfect' quote. 3

dont get the pinarello hype myself. im no tight wad but seriously seriously overpriced framesets. compounded by the fact you can get chinarellos where the postage is on par with the frame price.

i think its the left to long by a radiator melted look im not into

but i suppose it gives them an identity but surely form over function

I do love the pina look tbh.

It does make we wonder if they'll be supplying sky next yr then. I had a feeling they wouldn't as iirc the contract ends this season but maybe they will announce it afterall.

so that will be 5K for the frameset & forks! Pinarello's are so over priced when Trigon who make the frames offer their own lighter top of the range frameset for 1k less.

True, but then again no Pro Tour team has won diddly squat on a Trigon 3

Really?! I knew that most Pinarello frames are made in Taiwan, but I had read that Dogmas are handmade in Italy - does this just refer to the build up of the finished bikes rather than the frame itself?
