The Crankbrothers M19 is a highly capable multitool that packs 19 functions into a decently small package. It’s simply constructed and offers everything you need (and then some) for the trails, though it’s a little expensive and pretty hefty compared to some of its rivals.

The M19 is stacked out. You get a chain tool that’s compatible with 8 to 12 speed chains, Allen keys in 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8mm sizes, 8 and 10mm open spanners, and three screwdrivers: #1 and #2 Phillips, and a #2 flat. It also offers spoke keys in 0, 1, 2 and 3 gauges, plus T-10 and T-25 Torx keys.
The whole thing slips into a neat metal case to keep dirt away while it’s in your bag, and all-up weight is 175g – chunky compared to others on the market. You probably won’t want it in your pocket.

Despite all these tools, Crankbrothers has designed the M19 for simplicity. The whole thing is high-tensile steel, with knuled steel sides for grip. If you ever need to take the tool apart for cleaning, it’s very easily done, though it needs separate Allens to adjust the tension – the M19 isn’t self-tightening.

The M19 feels great in the hand and it’s a solid, confidence-inspiring unit. It happily stands up to bigger jobs and the tools are lengthy, so those hard-to-reach bolts are little issue.

If you’re happy to spend a bit more for quality and usefulness, you won’t be disappointed with the Crankbrothers M19. Its simple construction and range of tools stand out. It’s even a good starting point for budding home mechanics. While there are lighter, cheaper multitools out there with more functions, they just can’t match the M19 for quality, design or style.
