VOID is a relatively new brand hailing from Sweden and these bibs are designed for the transition into and out of winter, providing a good balance between protection from the elements and breathability.

The shorts are constructed from a membrane-based material (similar to something like a Windstopper fabric). This is windproof and water-resistant, though in practice I have found the material keeps me dry in all but the most abhorrent weather.
The high breathability rating of the fabric (20 000 g/m2/24 hrs) means that it has never felt clammy or overly sweaty. The key to maintaining that breathability with this kind of fabric is to wash it regularly, as otherwise the pores in the membrane get clogged with oils and sweat.
The shorts are very well constructed with nicely finished seams and no loose threads to be found anywhere. They have also held up very well to repeated washing with logos staying where they should and no fading apparent. This is high quality stuff and it shows in the construction and design.
However, the material is relatively heavy, with an almost neoprene-like feel that means it bunches a bit strangely when putting the bibs on. Out and about riding with them you don’t notice any of this though.
Quite simply, these are comfortable bib-shorts. Despite being constructed with fewer panels (and hence seams) to improve water-resistance, they fit very well. The bibs are comfortable too. Overall, they do feel a little more restrictive than other shorts but this is largely due to the heavy 290 gsm main material that protects you from the elements and the cold.
That said, if you are between sizes I would recommend sizing up as the shorts come up a little small. The tight cut took a little getting used to but in practice isn’t really an issue. In addition, be aware that the legs are cut relatively short. VOID do also offer a matching set of Armour leg-warmers for extra protection.
The microfibre-covered La Fonte HD Ergonomic pad is very comfortable, and is on the firmer side which I prefer. The wide siliconized leg grippers stay secure and spread the load well, with a subtle black on black VOID logo.
These shorts provide excellent protection when moving and you’re generating heat, but do have a tendency to cool down quickly when stopped – this isn’t really particularly surprising though. I’ve been using them in 0-10 degrees Celsius with no problem, though I would imagine they would become quite sweaty and clammy in warmer conditions.
Unfortunately, at £135 they’re not cheap, but they are a high quality and premium product that performs very well. The slight sizing issue aside, I highly recommend these as a versatile cold weather riding short.
