With the goal of combining a mountain bike and an e-bike all in one package, Transition has created the Relay. The brand claims that it’s a lightweight e-bike that employs a Fazua drive system and a lightweight but long-lasting 430Wh battery. Here are all of the details.

Transition says that the concept of two bikes in one was what got the brand so interested in creating an e-bike in the first place, having introduced the Repeater earlier in the year. This time, Transition wanted to make a lightweight, powered mountain bike with a removable battery. This was achieved by adopting Fazua’s Ride 60 system.

The Ride 60 system is claimed to be light in weight while offering 430Wh and 60nm of torque. The battery is then easily removed by opening a door on the downtube, enabling riders to switch from a pedal-assisted machine to a normal pedal-powered mountain bike without having to reach for the toolbox. While the motor stays in the frame, Transition promises that it’s just as efficient as a normal drivetrain with little added weight with the battery removed.

The Relay offers up to 170mm of travel at the rear wheel which can be reduced to 160mm and the bike can run either a mixed wheelset or a full 29″ setup. It’s available with either a carbon or aluminium frame and is available in six sizes from extra small to double extra large.

Designing a bike that can be two in one might sound a little strange at first but the brand thinks that the capability to ditch the battery and save weight makes for a super versatile bike. Without the extra power, the Relay is ripe for the uplift or trails that may not be as suitable for e-bikes. Bung in the battery and you’ll be able to sneak in a few cheeky laps during your lunch break.

This is just a taster of what Transition has in store for the Relay with more details to come. At the moment, the bike will be available in the spring of 2023.
