Two motorists have been handed jail terms at Worcester Crown Court in relation to a collision nearly two years ago that left a cyclist dead.
Ross Fawthtrop, aged 59, died at the scene of the collision outside the Swallow’s Nest pub on Bromsgrove Road, Romsley, Halesowen at 7.40am on 15 June 2017.
Shortly afterwards, a handwritten sign was erected at the scene underneath a 30 mph sign pleading with drivers to slow down.
It said: “Cyclist killed here. Father of two. Please, please, please slow down for cyclists. This could be your dad, son or brother out on a bike ride. It is so frightening being passed by cars too close and too fast. We have young families. RIP.”
Yesterday, the drivers of the two motor vehicles involved in the fatal crash were both found guilty of causing death by careless driving at Worcester Crown Court yesterday.
Balvinder Sangha, aged 46 and of Romley, who had been driving a Ford Transit van, was sentenced to 12 months in jail and given a three-year ban from driving.
Meanwhile, 21-year-old Emily Wilkinson, from Stourbridge, who had been at the wheel of a Vauxhall Corsa, was jailed for six months and disqualified from driving for two years.
Investigating officer PC Dan Barker of West Mercia Police commented: “This was a tragic incident to investigate, and our thoughts go out to David’s family at this time.
“West Mercia Police is committed to improving road safety and keeping the roads safe for everyone, and we will investigate those who drive without the due care and attention required, to ensure that every effort is made to bring offenders to justice,” he added.

The punishment doesn’t seem
The punishment doesn’t seem to fit the crime in my opion. 1 jailed for a year and the other for 6 months and a man died!

Punishment certainly does not
Punishment certainly does not fit the crime! This is so incredbly worrying at just how worthless a cyclist’s life seems to be. Madness and so very depressing. Things must change. How can we initiate changes in the law, so that there are significant sentences to those who drive like barbarians?!

The sentences are very high
The sentences are very high for careless driving based on previous lacks of punishment. Very unusual for 2 cars to be charged so you have to wonder what they were actually doing. In all likelihood they were dangerous, not careless!
