Vaseline lip balm works well for me.

Burt’s Bees is OK, but the peppermint can be a bit much around my nose

Tubeless tyres for me, with one spare tube wrapped in cling film and then gaffa tape (with a pull tab to get it open again) – tucked in under the saddle and held in place with an elastic band.  Small handpump, one tyre lever and small, flat minitool  (Decathlon), all held together with an elastic band, in one pocket.

Belroy waterproof leather phone case/wallet – cards, cash, phone, front door key.  Used all day, every day for the past year.  In middle pocket

    Well, the label-centric side

Well, the label-centric side of your brain might not like this but, out of all of the glasses that I’ve got (including Oakleys), the best at keeping the wind out of my eyes are Bolle Contour safety glasses.

They come with smoked or clear lenses and will cost you about £8/pair on ebay.  At that price, it’s got to be worth a go – CONTPSI or CONTPSF (clear and smoked respectively).  There are other lenses available too (polarised etc) but those do me.

They don’t fog up unless it’s a really damp day and you stop or your’re honking up a hill.

My Oakleys tend to get left behind frankly.

    The one that always staggers

The one that always staggers me is that when you tell a driver that they were too close and they refute it.  I never bother saying anything more – too much like trying to carry water in a sieve.

Dorking CC member here, so it’s home turf.  If you’re heading up Box Hill after 10 at the weekend it will be busy, but just as many cars as bikes.  Most of the bikes tend to be at the cafe anyway.     If you restrict yourself to doing loops in the immediate environs of Leith Hill and Ranmore then you will see more bikes.  As soon as you head south towards Sussex you will see very few cars or bikes.  Head East along the North Downs ridge and you will see few bikes, and the same if you head West.  Heading north and you’re off towards London and there’s more of everything.  If you think that you must go to Leieth Hill and Box Hill, well don’t be surprised if you find others with the same Idea.

If you do the Olympic circuit midweek, you’ll probably see a couple of others at the most.

I find that a squeeze with a standard  pair of pliers with a jaw offest on each side of the chain cracks them open easily enough and a quick stamp on the pedal resets them.

Take a deep breath and buy a Seasucker.  It’s probably the only rack you’ll ever need (as long as you don’t buy a convertible with a fabric roof).
