Was thinking of heading up to Surrey hills one day for a nice road bike ride

Now ive been up there a few times on the weekend to go out on the mtb and i found there to be way too much traffic on the roads for my liking, be it other roadies, mtb’s, lots of cars etc…

Traffic normally dosent bother me (commute through a busy major city everyday) but Surrey hills looks like a bit of a nightmare especially when descending with the amount of traffic

I want have an enjoyable ride and not have to keep slowing down/keep an eye on the traffic etc…

I normally ride the Southdowns so see very little traffic and tend not to get held up

So what day is best to go when its quiet? would pressume during the week but with holidays who knows!

If you need any route ideas have a look at my Strava (https://www.strava.com/athletes/3349223) – cutting out the trip to/from London I’ve got a number of loops around there that should do what you want.

Just seen you ride pretty muuch the same routes as me and live round the corner. Bet I’ve seen you on the roads some times. Another one of thosee pesky cyclists clogging up the roads đŸ˜‰

If you can head out towards

If you can head out towards ashdown foreset it’s generally a lot quieter out there. As mentioned, anything after 10am o na weekend anywhere near box hill/leith hill and it’s silly busy.

Whitedown lane is a hidden gem of a climb up to Ranmore common. The ridge road along Ranmore is also silly busy at weekends.

Dorking CC member here, so it

Dorking CC member here, so it’s home turf.  If you’re heading up Box Hill after 10 at the weekend it will be busy, but just as many cars as bikes.  Most of the bikes tend to be at the cafe anyway.     If you restrict yourself to doing loops in the immediate environs of Leith Hill and Ranmore then you will see more bikes.  As soon as you head south towards Sussex you will see very few cars or bikes.  Head East along the North Downs ridge and you will see few bikes, and the same if you head West.  Heading north and you’re off towards London and there’s more of everything.  If you think that you must go to Leieth Hill and Box Hill, well don’t be surprised if you find others with the same Idea.

If you do the Olympic circuit midweek, you’ll probably see a couple of others at the most.

    Our road club in Thames

Our road club in Thames Ditton does the surrey hills most sunday morning – between 9 and 12 it’s ok, getting busier after that on the way back, but that’s really just some of the larger roads, backroads are fairly quiet anyway – and avoiding box hill, the occasional charity/sportive ride tends to swell the numbers.  Weekdays are even quieter outside commute times.

The cafe at Newlands Corner is a good alternative to Box Hill and with a nice view south – I don’t particularly like the climb up to it but that’s more to do with having faster traffic at my back/cursing me đŸ˜‰ – particularly from the south side.

These are the two i normally park in when out on the mtb as the Holmebury hill one is right near barry knows best and the yoghurt pots but just lately even they have been getting busier

Going to head up early one day during the week when ive got a week off soon

I think it was clean last night, don’t remember the surface being bad. And having failed to eat enough earlier in the day, I spent a long time staring vacantly at that surface as I ground slowly upwards…

    Cheers guys

    Cheers guys

Normally head to Holmebury and Pitch hill on the mtb which are very busy on the weekends, so much that the car parks are overflowing and people are parking out on the surrounding roads where possible

Really want to hit up box, leith, holmebury and pitch hill in one ride

May head up during the week for a 7am start and see how it goes

Im very spoilt in only living 10- 15 miles from the southdowns (Im in Portsmouth) and theres some lovely country side before i even get there, its so quiet even at weekends, never much traffic and i tend to only see a small amount of other cyclists

Tanhurst Lane, check. Know I’ve passed by that way before, so annoying I might have missed it. Will name-check you and road.cc if it makes the top 10…

I have plenty of routes, most of them quiet, and I’m happy to lead rides out there on weekdays. But I don’t generally post routes or recommendations on open forums any more as my favourite climb started suffering from SCS – Selfish Cyclist Syndrome.
