I don’t think drivers would want to be diverted down Beaufort Road nowadays

They didn’t then, either. The opposition campaign persuaded the council to vote against the plans.

That’s just natural, innit?  People going where they need / want to go.  Who are you to interfere with people exercising their freedoms / development / “the march of progress”?  Are you some kind of nazi / communist?

Same as “the natural speed for the road”.  Apparently always a completely different thing than a “blanket limit” even when it’s one of all the ones at 30mph / NSL by default.

It even has natural traffic calming (see brooksby’s pic, there are half a dozen such spots). I kid you not, this was noted by both BCC and and the opposition to a previous (car-centric, but still beyond the motorist overton window of the day) plan to regulate vehicle movements on that road.

This never fails to amaze me – good to see that at least some crossings are to be installed after many years of the traffic madness on this wholly unsuitable country lane that happens to be inside a major city.

    A key road?  Hmm – https://maps.app.goo.gl/yx8WjK8pr1ZbcXqC7

Like we’ve said before, it is just weird how some completely unsuitable roads just magically become key through-routes…

    Ah, apparently the problem is
Ah, apparently the problem is that people who can’t drive or afford cars need cars the most.
(Mention of the elderly / those relying on formal and informal care.)

Barton Hill is one of the city’s most socio-economically deprived areas, and has one of the lowest levels of car ownership in the city. But people there are more likely to be working class, in jobs that need a car to get to.

That’s the bind with motonormativity of course – those at the bottom of the pile bear the brunt of the negative externalities and can’t get all the benefits of it. And it even makes those people dependent on the system which brought some of the problems. (TBF that doesn’t just apply to motoring).

Article was more nuanced than I thought (though it doesn’t interrogate anyone’s assertions) and they have found a few folks in the poorer area in favour.

Sounds like – as always – the real problem is *all those other drivers*. If only there were some way to fix it so they behaved / didn’t drive those journeys they didn’t really *need* to…

‘Class cleansing’ or safer streets – we visit Bristol’s new ‘liveable neighbourhood’: https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/class-cleansing-safer-streets-visit-10242424

(They mention in the article an Avonvale Cemetery, but they must be referring to Avonview Cemetery on Beaufort Rd)

Traffic counts etc will be checked, but also unspecified feedback from councillors, and the public.

Thanks. That all seems reasonable enough.

I had a look on BCC’s site and couldn’t find the formal criteria, so I guess they look at the before/after of the different modes of transport and then see if there’s reduced traffic and more active travel etc.

    https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/bus-gate-cameras-east-bristol-10232694

The controversial bus gates that form the last part of the East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood went ‘live’ yesterday – but one enforcement camera had already been vandalised before it even went operational.

The camera lens screen on at least two of the bus gate cameras installed by Bristol City Council were sprayed over with black spray paint over the weekend, ahead of the switch-on on Monday morning, which formally started the Liveable Neighbourhood pilot scheme.
