But presumably she was trying for the oh-gosh-isn’t-it-tricky-nowadays and me an elderly public servant, absence of buses in the countryside, *so* sorry for the trouble on this trivial matter, when we’ve both got far more important business to attend to…

Bristow is a dog whistle
Bristow is a dog whistle politician,like many these days. One of his central policies is “ending the war on the motorist”, which the Tories blundered upon by accident when they won the Uxbridge by election on the back of ULEZ protest votes. He imagines that the public of Peterborough would all come flocking to shop in the centre if only they didn’t have to pay to park (and by the way, the shopping offer is dreadful, with few individual retailers). However, he does not appear to offer any external funding for this.
Another one of his pledges is to have a community stadium built on the Embankment ( a precious city centre open space which hosts many popular outdoor events). Again, it is not clear where the funding will come from for this.
In reality, his only concern is being seen to support what he imagines a majority want. Whether these things happens or not is of secondary concern.

And to what end?  No politician can ever count drivers as life-long supporters because whatever you give them, drivers will always want more.  Plus if Bristow looks a few miles down the A605/A45, he’ll come to Wellingborough, the biggest place I know of that has free, unrestricted off-street town centre car parking – the retail boom town you’ve never heard of.

With the stretch closed between Whitstable Road and the Four Horseshoes pub, a usual two-minute trip will take 10 minutes via a five-mile diversion.

If Monkshill Road clogs, as it has done previously, drivers must go through Whitstable and Seasalter, adding four miles and more time – especially at rush hour with no emergency access.

If only the diversion roads were clear of private motorists, the ambulance would have a better chance of getting through quickly.  It’s not Samantha’s fault, but it increasingly looks like the standard H&S risk assessment for this sort of thing, which will be based on experience and analysis, is full closure.

from what I’ve seen, the digging for the Salisbury gas leak is all on the pavement but they’ve still closed off one lane.  I saw another example on the approach to Ringwood: guys looked to be doing something with a ditch several feet back from the road, but again had a lane closed on their side.

Hemdean rd is my very local route to the Chilterns, would be nice to 20 the whole thing.

Ingenious from the miscreant. But pricey mind.

Looks like a glorious bit of tarmac and well painted, I noticed it when popping into warings bakery, their excellent bread only, but their double knot ring doughnuts are incredible. Caversham is doing very well for fine baked goods, the Portuguese custard tarts at the little café up the hill, the next door Spanish delicatessen basque cheesecakes and bkrys cookie dough croissant are all highly recommended.

Could be the same contractors, but the taxi bay very close to Reading station was done in an evening, lovely tarmac and well painted. Keep clear had been scrawled on the pavement and painted on the fresh black stuff.
